A motor control device (60) controls the drive of a motor (10) by the rotation of a shaft fixed to a rotor, said motor (10) outputting torque to a rack shaft (95) that is a load. The motor control device (60) is provided with a rotational stress determination unit (65) dealing with a rotational stress that an object-to-be-protected member such as, for example, a shaft, a bearing, and an oil seal involved in shaft rotation or torque transmission to the load receives due to torque reversely input from the load (95). The rotational stress determination unit (65) determines rotational stress abnormality that the rotational stress is excessive, on the basis of the fact that a motor rotation angular speed (ω), a rotation angular acceleration (α), or the absolute value of a rotation evaluation amount that is a correlation amount between the rotation angular speed (ω) and the rotation angular acceleration (α) has exceeded a stress threshold value. The stress threshold value is set to a value exceeding the upper limit of the absolute value of the rotation evaluation amount obtained by normal drive control.
