Description:
MOUNTING FLANGE FOR MEASURING DEVICES

CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

This application claims the benefit of priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 15/386,585, filed on December 21, 2016, the entirety of which is incorporated by reference herein.

FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE

The present disclosure relates to mounting flanges configured to be mounted to measuring devices/instruments (e.g., pressure or temperature measuring devices/instruments) and, more particularly, to the design and use of user-friendly press-on mounting flanges configured to be mounted to pressure and temperature instruments (e.g., to the case of pressure or temperature gauges) to allow the instruments to be secured to a supporting structure (e.g., to a panel member or the like) via the mounting flanges.

BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE

In general, measuring devices, such as instruments and gauges used for measuring temperature and pressure, have innumerable uses in industry. For example, pressure gauges to measure the pressure of process media are well known. Pressure gauges are useful in a myriad of different environments for commercial and industrial applications. Some exemplary assemblies/systems in this general field are described and disclosed in U.S.

Patents Nos. 7,437,936 and 7,628,068, the entire contents of each being hereby incorporated by reference in their entireties.

There are some conventional panel mounting flange designs for measuring devices in the marketplace.

One conventional design is referred to as factory press fit. In this design, the measuring device/gauge comes with the flange pre-installed and is held together with an interference fit. These designs generally need mechanical assistance to assemble.

Another is the capturing flange design. Such flanges typically do not go around the gauge case at all. Instead, the flanges trap the gauge window against the panel from the front, and the front bezel of the gauge is used to keep the gauge from falling though the panel hole. These designs often allow easy rotation of the gauge when in place, which can be

undesirable. Another approach incorporates welded/adhered flanges. For example, this is where the flange is permanently attached to the outside diameter of the gauge case via a weld or sometimes an adhesive. These typically must be fabricated at the manufacturer of the product.

Another design utilizes rear fixed flanges. These designs wrap around the gauge case and attach to the rear of the gauge typically via screws. These are sometimes able to be assembled by the customer but can require additional parts.

An interest exists for improved mounting flanges for measuring devices, and related methods of use. These and other inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement are addressed and/or overcome by the assemblies, systems and methods of the present disclosure.

As shown in FIG. 1, a user can then move the flange 10 in the direction of Arrow D toward the rear side 25 of device 11 until the rear side 25 of case 12 is positioned within the central opening 15 of flange 10.

As the flange 10 is moved in the direction of Arrow D toward the rear side of ring/bezel 14 of device 11, at least portions of each gripping member 22 (e.g., portions of members 22-22E) will mount and/or abut against case 12 to releasably secure flange 10 to case 12 of device 11.

In exemplary embodiments and as noted above, each gripping portion 26 of each member 22 is configured and dimensioned to releasably grip, mount or abut against case 12 of measuring device 11 for mounting purposes of measuring device 11 (FIGS. 1-3), with each gripping portion 26 providing a spring-force against case 12. Moreover and in some embodiments, the top corners 34, 36 of each portion 26 may not be chamfered or the like, and these top corners 34, 36 are configured and dimensioned to grip, bite and/or abut against case 12 when each gripping portion 26 is releasably mounted or abutted against case 12 of measuring device 11.

Furthermore and in certain embodiments, each gripping portion 26 can extend/angle from walls 16, 18 inward toward the central longitudinal axis A of central opening 15 toward the rear side 23 of mounting flange 10, and the inwardly angled gripping portions 26 can help provide a spring-force against case 12 when gripping members 22 releasably grip, mount or abut against case 12 of measuring device 11.

Flange 10 is configured to allow user force (e.g., handheld user force) to push or press the flange 10 onto the case 12 with at least portions of each gripping member 22 mounting or abutting against case 12, and allowing the user force to move the flange 10 until portions of front wall 16 abut against or is positioned near/adjacent the rear side of front ring/bezel 14 of device 11 (FIGS. 2 and 10).

In exemplary embodiments, only portions of each gripping member 22 (e.g., portions of top end 32 and/or top corners 34, 36 of gripping portions 26) come into contact or abutment with case 12 as flange 10 is moved toward the rear side of ring 14. In other embodiments, other sections of gripping member 22 (e.g., lower sections below top end 32 and/or sections of portion 24) come into contact or abutment with case 12 as flange 10 is moved toward the rear side of ring 14.

In some embodiments, it is noted that when only portions of each gripping member 22 come into contact/abutment with case 12 as flange 10 is moved toward the rear side of ring 14, the inner diameter sections 17 (e.g., sections 17-17E) positioned between the gripping members 22-22E do not come into contact/abutment with case 12 as flange 10 is moved toward the rear side of ring 14.

In other embodiments, at least portions of the inner diameter sections 17-17E positioned between the gripping members 22-22E do come into contact/abutment with case 12 as flange 10 is moved toward the rear side of ring 14 (as well as portions of each gripping member 22).

Prior to moving the flange 10 in the direction of Arrow D toward the rear side of ring 14 (FIG. 1), a user can align one of the apertures 20 above or behind the gauge/device fill plug 40, and then the user can press and move the flange, utilizing user- force (e.g., hand- pressing force), in the direction of Arrow D onto the back of the case 12 with the gripping members 22 contacting the case 12, and then continue moving the flange 10 with the hand- pressing force until front wall 16 abuts against or near the rear side of ring/bezel 14 of device 11 (FIG. 2). In exemplary embodiments, a user can utilize substantially even hand-pressed force around flange 10 and in the direction of Arrow D to prevent warping of flange 10 as it forms around case 12 and as it moves toward the rear side of ring 14.

After the flange 10 is moved/pressed until wall 16 abuts against or is positioned near/adjacent the rear side of ring/bezel 14 (FIGS. 2-3), a user can then position the rear side 25 of device 11 with mounted flange 10 in an aperture 42 of a supporting structure 13 or panel member 13 or the like. More particularly, a user can position the device 11 with mounted flange 10 relative to aperture 42 of member 13 as shown in FIG. 2. A user can then move the rear side 25 of device 11 in the direction of Arrow B, with the rear side 25 of device 11 moving through the aperture 42 until the outer wall 38 of flange 10 abuts against the front wall 43 of member 13 (FIGS. 9-10).

In certain embodiments and in this position as shown in FIGS. 9-10, substantially only outer wall 38 contacts front wall 43, and a user is free to rotate device 11 with mounted flange 10 in a circular fashion within and relative to aperture 42 (e.g., in the direction of Arrow C of FIG. 9, or in the direction of Arrow D in FIG. 9). As such, a user can rotate device 11 with mounted flange 10 until each aperture 20 of flange 10 is aligned with a respective hole 45 of member 13. A fastener member (e.g., a screw or the like) can then be fastened/secured through apertures 20 and holes 45 to releasably secure device 11 with mounted flange 10 to member 13.

It is noted that device 11 with mounted flange 10 can thereafter be unsecured from member 13 by removing fasteners from apertures 20 and holes 45, and then removing device 11 and flange 10 from aperture 42. If desired, flange 10 can then be removed from device 11 by user-force by moving the flange 10 in the direction of Arrow U in FIG. 1 until the gripping members 22 no longer contact case 12, and flange is free from device 11 (FIG. 1). Flange 10 can be secured and un-secured and re-secured, etc., from or to device 11 or other devices 11 as needed/desired (e.g., flange 10 is reusable; flange 10 can be utilized with several different devices 11 at different times, etc.).

Referring again to FIGS. 2-3, after the flange 10 is moved/pressed until wall 16 abuts against or is positioned near/adjacent the rear side of ring/bezel 14, it is noted that the gripping members 22 of mounting flange 10 holds the case 12 of the measuring device 11 with adequate grip such that the flange 10 will not easily rotate radially relative to the case 12 (e.g., in the direction of Arrow C or Arrow D in FIG. 9), and the flange 10 will not easily slide/move axially away from the bezel/front ring 14 of the measuring device 11 in the direction of Arrow U of FIG. 1. Tests have been performed on exemplary flanges 10. For example, an exemplary flange 10 was pressed onto a 63 mm device 11. Some goals were to prove that the flange 10 could rigidly hold the pressure gauge 11 in place, be assembled by hand with no tools, and not deform from the assembly process. All of these goals were successful, as the pressure gauge 11 was held by the gripping members 22 with significant resistance to rotation such that the flange 10 would not easily rotate radially relative to the case 12, and the flange 10 would not easily slide/move axially away from the bezel/front ring 14 of the measuring device 11 in the direction of Arrow U of FIG. 1. Moreover, the mounted flange 10 maintained its appearance.

In exemplary embodiments and as discussed above, the present disclosure provides an advantageous panel mounting flange 10 intended to be used with pressure and temperature instrumentation 11. It is noted that panels 13 are sometimes used by end users to create gauge 11 clusters (e.g., like the dashboard of an automobile). This can give the machine operator feedback on the function or stations of the machine they are using. Exemplary flange 10 holds the instrument 11 in place in the panel 13.

The assemblies/methods and exemplary flanges 10 of the present disclosure provide several advantages. For example, the assemblies/methods advantageously allow an end user to assemble (e.g., assemble by hand) the mounting flange 10 to the measuring device 11 in the field. The mounting flange 10 also grips/holds the case 12 of the measuring device 11 with adequate grip such that the flange 10 will not easily rotate radially relative to the case 12, and the flange 10 will not easily slide/move axially away from the bezel/front ring 14 of the measuring device 11. The systems also advantageously allow for the securement of the mounting flange 10 to the measuring device 11 without additional manufacturing steps or equipment (e.g., without welds, welders, presses, adhesive dispensers, etc.), and the mounting flange 10 holds itself in place to the measuring device 11 without the need for additional fasteners or the like. As such, the above noted improvements of the systems/assemblies of the present disclosure thereby eliminate drawbacks of conventional designs, and also provide significant manufacturing, operational and/or commercial advantages as a result.

Although the systems and methods of the present disclosure have been described with reference to exemplary embodiments thereof, the present disclosure is not limited to such exemplary embodiments and/or implementations. Rather, the systems and methods of the present disclosure are susceptible to many implementations and applications, as will be readily apparent to persons skilled in the art from the disclosure hereof. The present disclosure expressly encompasses such modifications, enhancements and/or variations of the disclosed embodiments. Since many changes could be made in the above construction and many widely different embodiments of this disclosure could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the drawings and specification shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. Additional modifications, changes, and substitutions are intended in the foregoing disclosure. Accordingly, it is appropriate that the appended claims be construed broadly and in a manner consistent with the scope of the disclosure.
