Abstract:
The present invention relates to a mucoadhesive pharmaceutical composition comprising a poly-ionic complex of chitosan and a polyacrylic acid polymer. When the composition of the present invention is used as an oral preparation, the retention time of the preparation in the gastrointestinal tract is extended by the mucoadhesive and swelling properties thereof, such that the composition is useful in improving the absorption of oral sustained release preparations, retentive preparations of active ingredients with limited absorption sites, and active ingredients with varying solubilities according to pH.
