Abstract:
The objective of the invention is to provide a multi-core fiber used for communications wherein more cores can be arranged on the condition that the communication multi-core fiber can be laid with reliability secured. A used-for-communications multi-core fiber (10) that propagates optical signals comprises: a clad (12); a single core (11a) arranged at the center of the clad (12); and seven to ten cores (11b) arranged at equal intervals in such a manner that the cores (11b) surround the single core (11a). It is arranged that: the outer diameter of the clad (12) be equal to or less than 230 μm; the center-to-center distance between mutually adjacent cores (11a, 11b) be equal to or greater than 30 μm; the distance between the center of each core (11b) and the peripheral surface of the clad (12) be equal to or greater than 35 μm; and the mode field diameter of a light propagating along each of the cores (11a, 11b) be between 9 μm and 13 μm.
