Description:
TITLE OF INVENTION

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL TRAVEL ARTICLE

DESCRIPTION

CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS The present application claims the benefit and priority of Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 62/652,1 62 filed April S, 201 8 for Multi-Functional Travel Article under 35 U.S.C. Section 1 1 9(e), which is hereby incorporated by reference as if fully reproduced herein.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION [Para 1] 1 . Field of the Invention.

[Para 2] This disclosure relates to travel articles such as travel bags or suitcases having compartments configured to store clothing in addition to exercise garments and accessories or other items. In particular, this disclosure relates to a multi-functional travel bag for holding, separating and transporting travel, fitness and business articles (clothing, clothing accessories, etc.) in separate compartments. More specifically, this disclosure relates to a multi-functional travel bag, particularly useful for separating travel, fitness and business articles from other types of articles within compartments of the travel bag. [Para B] 2. Background Information.

[Para 4] Travel suitcases are widely used and available, some of which include soft fabric or flexible pouch compartments for storing toiletries and other similar items separately from clothing. In some cases, this can be useful to protect clothing from accidental spills of shampoo,

mouthwash or other liquids; to provide a single storage place for toiletries; or to provide a removable pouch that can be placed separately in a convenient location during travel, e.g., in a bathroom.

[Para 5] Often times, travelers desire to bring exercise equipment so that they may exercise at their travel destination, or wish to bring food and different clothing and office materials. For example, a traveler may desire to bring small weights, mats, water bottles, or other exercise items. For example, a person may wish to carry food items or work materials such as computers or other electrical devices. However, these types of articles are typically not conducive to being stored in the same suitcase compartment (or even the same suitcase) as clothing, especially business attire, due to possible contamination by sweat, odors or other factors. Moreover, it is often difficult to pack travel, business and fitness articles within a single bag and have those products readily accessible for use when desired.

[Para 6] A need, therefore, exists for an improved travel bag with separate compartments for various types of articles. In particular, a need exists for a travel bag configured for holding articles, such as travel, business, fitness, and toiletry articles separately from a remainder of the articles within the interior of the suitcase.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[Para 7] In one exemplary embodiment, a travel article is provided. In an exemplary embodiment, the travel article includes a main body having a storage compartment itself including a plurality of storage sub compartments. The at least one storage sub-compartment of the plurality of storage sub-compartments is configured to receive an exercise or electronic article so as to isolate the exercise or electronic article from other articles within said storage compartment.

[Para 8] Travel articles of the type described herein can be embodied in different types of travel-related objects, such as, and without limitation, suitcases, luggage, weekender bags, backpacks, executive bags, wallets, clutches, purses and other articles.

[Para 9] Certain advantages of the systems described herein include the ability to store certain items, such as exercise equipment, clothing and accessories separate from non-exercise clothing and attire; the ability to independently store other, additional items, including, but not limited to business-related objects and articles such as laptop

computers, tablets, phones, pens, paper, notebooks and business attire; by providing separate storage spaces for such objects, travelers are less burdened when searching for such specific items that would otherwise be stored in one general, shared compartment, as is the case with most suitcases; relatedly, travelers are able to keep business and non-exercise clothing free from odors or stains that may be transferred thereto by worn exercise clothing and equipment; among others

[Para 10] In a further aspect the travel bag includes a separate base tunnel compartment (first compartment) configured to hold shoes or other items, and an insulated compartment (second compartment) which spans a height and a length of the bag. The insulated compartment includes an inner insulated layer and an exterior insulated layer and is configured for holding foods. Directly above the base tunnel is a personal compartment (third compartment) having space and optional dividers for separately receiving toiletry bags or other items. An additional compartment (fourth compartment), open to the top, is positioned adjacent the personal compartment. Yet an additional compartment (fifth compartment), positioned outward from the open top compartment, is positioned at an outer side of the bag or article. In aspects the fourth and fifth compartments also span a height and length of the bag. In aspects the bag includes a structural tunnel positioned in the first compartment. In further aspect the bag includes a pair of stiletto holders for receiving heels of dress shoes, for instance. [Para 1 1 ] Unless otherwise defined, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art. Although methods and materials similar or equivalent to those described herein can be used in the practice or testing of any described embodiment, suitable methods and materials are described below. In addition, the materials, methods, and examples are illustrative only and not intended to be limiting. In case of conflict with terms used in the art, the present specification, including definitions, will control

[Para 12] The foregoing summary is illustrative only and is not intended to be in any way limiting. In addition to the illustrative aspects, embodiments, and features described above, further aspects,

embodiments, and features will become apparent by reference to the drawings and the following detailed description and claims.

Bag 600 is TSA (U.S. Transportation Security Administration) compliant and fits in airplane overhead compartments and beneath airplane seats.

[Para 67] In this specification reference is made to insulated layers or compartments. The adjective“insulated” or“insulating” is intended to be given its usual and normal meaning as understood by persons skilled in the art. It is not intended to encompass single layers, or skins, of conventional webbing materials, such as Nylon™, woven polyester, canvas, cotton, burlap, leather, paper and so on, that are not otherwise indicated as having, or being relied upon to have, particular properties as effective thermal insulators other than in the context of being provided with heat transfer resistant materials or features beyond that of the ordinary sheet materials in and of themselves. This definition provided in the specification is intended to supplant any dictionary definition, and to prevent interpretation that strays from the customary and ordinary meaning of the term“insulated” as provided herein. [Para 68] Figure 6 is a section view taken along line 6—6 of Figure 5 and shows various compartments of bag 600. A first compartment 61 0 is positioned at a bottom of bag 600 and spans the entire length of the bag. A doorway 61 1 having a zipper 601 provides access to the first compartment 610.

[Para 69] In one aspect first compartment 61 0 is defined in part by a top wall 616 which is a fabric material stitched or secured to side walls. The side walls may also be of fabric material and stitched or secured to a bottom wall 61 7. Bottom wall 61 7 is also fabric in one example. In other aspects bottom wall 61 7 includes a flat generally rigid structure to operate as a base for bag 600. Feet or slide buttons are secured to a bottom of bottom wall 61 7 as desired. In one aspect first compartment 610 has a volume of between 250 and 400 cubic inches (roughly 1 8 inches long by 4-5 inches high by 4-5 inches wide). In one aspect a bottom wall operates as a base which spans the entire width and length of bag 600 and includes a firm material. The material in one aspect is covered by fabric or other layer.

[Para 70] First compartment 61 0 in a further aspect includes a tunnel 614 having rigid or semi-rigid side walls 61 2 and top wall 61 3. In one aspect the walls are a unitary wall which spans the length or substantially the length of bag 600. In one aspect tunnel 614 is made of plastic or hardened plastic. In further aspects tunnel is made of a composite material or materials and in one aspect is made of carbon fiber material. Other strong and rigid or substantially rigid materials may also be used to form tunnel 614 to create compartment 610. Tunnel 61 4 is light weight and strong and supports or assists bag 600 so that bag 600 stands upright with no or minimal sagging, even when loaded with materials in the other compartments as noted herein. In one aspect first compartment is configured to receive and hold shoes or other items which are bulky or to be separated from the other compartments. In one aspect only a single door 61 1 opens to access first compartment 610. In other aspects another door, opposite door 61 1 , may be used to access compartment 610.

[Para 71] Compartment 610 is a fixed compartment in that it is not moveable (i.e., compartment 61 0 is always positioned beneath second compartment 620 as described herein). A top wall 616 of first

compartment 610 operates as a bottom wall of second compartment 620. In one aspect first compartment 61 0, and tunnel 614, does not include a liner which is otherwise pulled outward. Optionally a pull-out liner bag is included within tunnel compartment 61 0 or within tunnel 61 4, while tunnel 614 itself is fixed into position. Where a liner or bag is included, such liner or bag inserts into the fixed tunnel 61 4 so that tunnel 614 continues to provide the structural support. In some aspects, various structural ribs, gussets or supports 61 5 are included at various positions along the length of tunnel 614 to provide added structural support to tunnel 614 as needed.

[Para 72] A zipper 601 allows opening of door 61 1 to access

compartment 610. In one aspect fabric is formed to receive tunnel 61 4 which is slid (or slides) into a bottom portion of bag 600 to create compartment 610. The tunnel 61 4 in one aspect inserts into a fabric sleeve where it is held into position. Tunnel 61 4 may also be sewn into position. In alternatives, tunnel 61 4 simply rests or friction fits within bag 600 to form compartment 610. In alternatives, tunnel 61 4 may be selectively removed. In one aspect the walls 61 2, 61 3 of tunnel are continuous and smooth. In other aspects the walls 61 2, 61 3 comprise a lattice structure having openings, slots, holes, supports 61 5 or webbings. The openings provide a lighter weight tunnel 614 while still providing a desired structural support. While tunnel 614 is shown to have a generally rectangular cross section, tunnel 61 4 may also be rounded or have rounded“corners” or radii and may be of other configuration to provide the space of compartment 610.

[Para 73] As shown in Figure 7, tunnel 61 4 is generally U-shaped.

Tunnel 614 may be made by an extrusion process and configured to slide within first compartment 610. If tunnel 614 is broken or cracked, it may be easily replaced by slide removal from compartment 610. In other aspects tunnel 614 has a hollow generally rectangular cross-section. If further aspects, instead of tunnel 614, side walls 61 2 (without a

connecting top wall 61 B) may be inserted into first compartment 610. Such disconnected side walls 61 2 are inserted into sleeves or pockets of respective walls 62B, 631 of bag 600. In this manner, top wall 616 will tend to sag downward into the space of first compartment 61 0; yet larger items may also be placed within compartment 610 which would otherwise be inhibited by a top wall 61 3. The supports 61 5 shown in Figure 7 are representative of the style or positioning of openings and represent that tunnel 614 may be other than simply a continuous walled structure. The side walls 61 2 of tunnel 614 may also be of an open or lattice structure.

[Para 74] Tunnel 614 is configured to receive large shoes. For people with smaller shoes, multiple pairs of shoes may be inserted into tunnel 614, for instance. In one aspect tunnel 614 has width of about 4 to 5 inches and a height of about 4 to 5 inches. In one aspect, first

compartment has a height of 4 inches and a width of 5 inches. In one aspect bag 600 has a width of 7 inches and in further aspects a width of about 8 inches. In one aspect bag 600 has a length of 1 8 inches. In one aspect bag 600 has a height of 14 inches. Other sizes or dimensions may be used.

[Para 75] Bag 600 includes a second compartment 620 positioned above compartment 610 and tunnel 61 4. Compartment 620 is accessed via a zippered top portion 622. A zipper pull and zipper 602 provides access to compartment 620. A user may place his or her personal items in compartment 620, such as clothing, a toiletry bag, work-out

equipment, and the like (or other items). In some aspects dividers are included within compartment 620 for internal separation of items.

Typically second compartment 620 provides the greatest volume of space within bag 600. In one aspect, compartment 620 has a volume of 650 to 800 cubic inches. In one aspect compartment 620 has a volume of about 720 cubic inches (1 8 length by 10 height by 4 width).

[Para 76] Bag 600 incudes a third compartment 630. A zipper pull and zipper 603 provides access to compartment 630. Compartment 630 includes an internal insulation layer 631 and an external insulation layer 632. Insulation layers 631 , 632 include insulation configured to inhibit heat transfer through the respective layers. In one aspect insulation layers 631 , 632 comprise a layer of thermal insulation material

positioned between a pair of layers, such as a pair of polyester fabric layers. The degree of thermal insulation will depend on the type and thickness of the thermal insulation material and the polyester fabric layers. Different materials may also be used to create the insulation layers 631 , 632. Compartment 630 allows for storage of cold (or hot) foods or other materials. Separate dividers may also be included within compartment 630 to hold hot packs or cold pack to keep food cool (or warm). In one aspect compartment 630 spans the length of bag 600. In a further aspect compartment 630 spans the height of bag 600. Particularly, compartment 6B0 includes space or area which is positioned at a ground level, such as adjacent to tunnel 614. Ice packs or other materials may be positioned at lower space 6B5. In one aspect the insulated layer 631 spans downward to include an insulated layer portion 633 which is positioned against wall 61 2. In a further aspect, wall 61 2 is made of thermally insulating materials. In one aspect compartment 630 has a volume of about 200 to 450 cubic inches. In one aspect, the total internal volume within bag 600 is about 2016 cubic inches (1 8 length by 1 4 height by 8 width). In one aspect, compartment 630 has a volume no greater than 50% of the total volume of bag 600 (otherwise, the bag 600 would be too large to be practical for purposes of modern travel; leaving too little room for other items; and being too heavy or bulky). In a further aspect, compartment 630 has a volume of no greater than 25% of the total volume of bag 600. In a further aspect, compartment 630 has a volume of about 1 2% of the total volume of bag 600 (252/201 6 cubic inches). The volume of compartment 630 as a percentage of the total volume will be much greater where there are no additional compartments of the bag 600, such as the fourth compartment or fifth compartments as noted below.

[Para 77] In a further aspect, bag 600 includes a fourth compartment 640 which has an open top 641 . Compartment 640 is convenient for insertion of a computer, such as a 1 5 inch laptop computer or other device or items. In one aspect compartment 640 spans the length of bag 600. In a further aspect compartment 640 spans the height of bag 600.

A pad or padding may be inserted at bottom portion of compartment 640. Configuring compartment 640 to have opening 641 (without a zipper or other closing mechanism) is convenient for travelers.

Positioning compartment 640 between compartments 650 and 620 provides good protection for a laptop positioned within compartment 640. A closing strap (shown in subsequent figures) is also configured to span across the entire top of bag 600 to further provide protection from a laptop falling out of compartment 640. The closing strap may include a magnet or an internal magnet (or other connecting mechanism) which attracts to a magnet embedded within one of the side walls 652 or 632 of bag 600. Wall 623 is shared by compartment 640 and compartment 620. In an alternative, compartment 640 is positioned above compartment 61 0 (similar to the positioning of compartment 620 above compartment 610). In one aspect compartment 640 has a volume of about 250 cubic inches (approximately 1 8 by 14 by 1 inch).

[Para 78] In a further aspect bag 600 includes a fifth compartment 650. A zipper 605 provides access to compartment 650. Compartment 650 is configured to receive office materials, notepads, folders,

magazines, papers, and work materials. Dividers and slots are positioned along the interior or walls 651 , 652, convenient for holding pens and papers, and other office equipment. A notebook or table slot 654 is configured to receive a notebook computer, 1 2 inch laptop, tablet computer, iPad or other tablet device. An additional phone slot 655 may also be included for convenient phone storage within compartment 650. Compartment 650 is also configured with various storage pockets such as earbud pocket (together with phone is desired), keys pocket, pen slots, jewelry pockets, glasses pocket, USB charger pocket, and other pockets.

In one aspect compartment 650 has a volume of 375 to 500 cubic inches (approximately 1 8 by 14 by 1 .5 inches).

[Para 79] Figure 8 is a top view of bag 600 with various compartments shown in an open mode or position. For instance, zipper 605 is

unzipped to reveal compartment 650 in which is positioned various notebooks, 1 2 inch computer, and telephone. Zipper 602 is unzipped to reveal compartment 620 and various clothing or fitness gear, toiletry bag, side pockets for socks, swimsuit, and a removable 1 4 inch by 1 2 inch laundry bag for sweaty or dirty clothes. Zipper 603 is unzipped to reveal compartment 630 and various foot items or ice packs. Figure 8 also shown an exterior water bottle which is positioned within a water bottle sleeve or holder. Water bottle sleeve is positioned opposite door 61 1 . Figure 8 obscures view of compartment 640 and shows only a portion of opening 641 into which a laptop computer, such as a 1 5 inch long computer inserts. Because compartment 640 does not include a zipper or other enclosing device, a person can easily access his or her laptop computer. Of course, an overall strap as shown in subsequent Figures is optionally used to cover across all of the compartments 620, 6B0, 640, and 650 to assist in overall closing of the top portion of bag 600.

[Para 80] In a further aspect first compartment is devoid of a structural component and is simply a compartment having flexible surrounding walls. A top wall is configured to sag into the space defined by compartment 610 (which is devoid of a rigid or fixed tunnel 61 4). A user may place objects, such as shoes, within compartment 610 and have the top wall 616 (i.e., a fabric panel instead of a structural wall 61 B) extend downward upon the inserted shoes or objects. In one aspect, the wall 616 is flexible and is stitched along walls 631 and 623 to form compartment 610, for instance.

[Para 81] Figure 8 is a top view of the bag 600 in an open mode and showing various items inserted into the bag 600 and their accompanying sections and pockets of the bag. For instance, proceeding clockwise, a water bottle 660 is inserted into a water bottle pocket positioned at an end of bag 600. A fitness gear section 620A is provided within

compartment 620 and includes a thin divider to create the section 620A within the compartment 620. Handles 661 may be of a 7 inch or 2 inch variety and secured to the side walls of bag 600. Ice packs 662 are insertable into compartment 630. Separate pockets or sleeves are provided to hold ice packs 662 as desired. A clothes section 620B is provided in compartment 620. Side pockets 620C are provided for storage of swim suit or other gear. Side pocket 620D is convenient for holding a laundry bag which may detach from gag 600. A hangable toiletry bag 620E fits within a section as shown and subdivided from the remainder of compartment 620. A shoulder strap 664 connects to hardware at the top of each end of bag 600. A stiletto holder 66S or holders 66S is provided in compartment 620 at end wall 61 8 which comprises a pair of holes or openings for the heels of stiletto shoes (or even chunky or larger diameter heel shoes) to protrude into compartment 620 of bag 600. Stiletto holder holes may be seen in the other figures herein, including Figuresl 8. A charger/glasses holder section 650A is positioned within fifth compartment 650. A glasses pocket 650 B, jewelry pocket 650C, keys pocket 650D, pone pocket 650E, notebook slots 650F, journal pocket 650G, tablet pocket 650H, wallet pocket 650J are also provided within fifth compartment 650. A 1 2 inch laptop and sleeve 6501 (see also tablet slot 654) are also included at compartment 650. A drop zipper opening 650L is provided which is an expansion web such that compartment wall 652 may expand outward from wall 651 .

[Para 82] As shown in FIG. 1 8, stiletto holder 663 in one aspect is a button 668 or grommet which is contained within or inserted into the end wall 61 8 of bag 600. Button 668 is held into end wall 61 8 by riveting or other fastening. Button 668 in one aspect includes a pliable center area which opens to receive a heel or stiletto of a shoe 670. In one aspect the center area 669 is a rubber flap or series of rubber flaps with slits which act as a diaphragm to hold or friction fit the stiletto into secure position. In one aspect the button 668 has a diameter if about one inch and accommodates insertion of very thin and very thick stilettos or heels of shoes. The friction fit center area 669 accommodates secure holding of different diameter heels. The remaining portion of shoe 670 is free to hang from outside of wall 61 8. The stiletto holder 663 is useful for holding dress shoes despite having minimal room available within a compartment within the bag 600. The stiletto holder 663 is also useful for holding dress shoes that have tall heels which would make the shoe 670 otherwise difficult or impossible to store within first compartment 610. The existence and positioning of holders 663 (and accompanying shoes) is also a fashion mechanism when bag 600 is configured to be adorned with stylish shoes 670. The shoes 670 hang from the end of bag 600 so they do not interfere with normal carrying or operation of the bag 600. At an opposite end wall 61 8 is positioned the water bottle holder and accompany water bottle. A pair of stiletto holders 663 accommodates a pair of shoes 663. In a further aspect a stiletto holder 663 is an opening without a central pliable area, in which case the stiletto opening is sufficient to receive a stiletto heel. In one aspect a stiletto holder 663 is provided at opposite end walls of bag 600 and in other aspects a pair of holders 663 are provided at a single end wall.

[Para 83] In one aspect an optional lock washer 665 having a central hole is inserted upon the stiletto or heel of shoe 670 and slit into a locking position as shown in FIG. 1 8. Lock washer 665 in one aspect is made of pliable material such as rubber and accommodates insertion upon heels of various thickness or diameter. In one aspect with respect to FIG. 1 9, an optional lock bar 667 having a pair of central holes or slits is inserted upon the pair of stiletto or heels of shoes 670 inserted into second compartment 620. Instead of using two separate lock washers 665, the lock bar 667 accommodates efficient use. The lock bar 667 has a length such that the central holes or slits align with respective stiletto holders 663. A user may push lock bar 667 upon respective heels of shoes 679 and slide toward (or against) the inside of end wall 61 8 or against buttons 668.

[Para 84] In a further aspect with respect to FIG. 20 a cinch strap or straps 680a, 680b is connected to bag 600. One strap 680b is connected to an exterior wall of bag 600 such as at external layer 632. Another strap 680a is connected to an opposite exterior wall. A snap 682 or other fastener is set within the straps 680a, 680b. Operation of cinch straps 680 closes the exterior walls or retains the walls from spanning outwards. The cinch strap 680 allows bag 600 to maintain a desired profile. Multiple snaps or connectors may be used to vary the degree of cinch. In an alternative, cinch cords 682 are strung within opposite wall layers of bag 600 and connect within a cinch ball 684 having a push button. The push button releases and secures the respective cinch cords 682 and allows the ball 684 to slide up and down the cords 682 and expand or retract the cord length to vary the distance between respective side walls 6B2. A user may therefor push the button on the cinch ball 684 to slide the ball along the cinch cords 682 to adjust the length of separation between the outer walls as desired. Releasing the button secures the cords and outer walls into position.

[Para 85] RFID and EMF material 650K are used throughout bag 600. Particularly, the RFID blocking material is inserted within the panels or walls of bag 600 for security purposes such that easy use of RFID readers is inhibited or lessened (for the protection of the devices stored within bag 600). An EMF security material is also included within the bag for protection, especially around the electronic component pockets.

[Para 86] Figure 9 is a top view of bag 600 shown in Figure 8 with the items removed for clarity. Zippers 60B and 605 span three sides of their respective compartments 630, 650 so that each compartment may be fully opened for insertion of materials. Side webs (expansion panels) are provided at the ends of the compartments 630, 650 so that the panels to not drop to the floor when fully opened.

[Para 87] As may be appreciated in the Figures, alternative extension handles and wheels are included with bag 600 for convenience of transportation. The spinner wheels 244 shown in FIG 2 may be oriented as shown or arranged perpendicular to what is shown, and may rotate or swivel as appreciated. [Para 88] Applicant claims the ornamental design for the Multi functional travel article as shown and described. In this regard, Figure 1 0 is an isometric view of the travel bag 600 showing an embodiment of the design of this invention and including features relating to the disclosure and below listed claims. Figures 1 1 through 1 7 are various views of the design.
