Title:
MULTI-PURPOSE CANDLE LAMP
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1999/051912
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The multi-purpose candle lamp of this invention is designed to operate as a wind resistant unit that can function as a lantern (with a 360 degree or directional light source), an emergency or standby cooker unit and an insect repelling device. Lightweight, robust and compact the product is designed for outdoor recreational activities and for use by armed forces. As a lantern it is fuelled by a standard candle cut in half for ease of candle re-supply worldwide. It is easy to load and light by virtue of its spring guide and opening heat deflector. A reflector fitted to the inside of the glass converts its 360 degree light into an amplified directional light source. Its telescopically extending glass mantle-housing unit allows for compact and protected storage of the lamp. A cooker ring, fuel burner and stand that all lock together for compact storage allow the lamp to be converted into a standby cooker operating on candle power or an emergency cooker operating on a purpose made environmentally friendly fuel gel. An attachment that carries a heat activated impregnated insect repelling pad can be fitted to the top of the lamp allowing it to operate simultaneously as a lantern and insect repelling device. A three part custom-made carry bag provides compact storage for the complete product and its fuel requirements for an average four day excursion.

Description:
MULTI-PURPOSE CANDLE LAMP DESCRIPTION OF AN EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION The product of this invention is a lightweight and robust multi-purpose candle lamp that operates as a lantern (with a 360 degree or directional light source). a standby or emergency cooker unit and an insect repelling device.

In standby cooker mode (Figure D: 1) the cooker ring is fitted directly onto the glass mantle-housing unit. together with the stand to stabilise the unit, and operates simultaneously as a lantern and standby cooker.

In emergency cooker mode (Figure D: 2) the entire glass mantle-housing unit is removed and the cooker ring fitted directlv onto the outer casing. The candle holder is replaced bv the fuel burner which locks onto the spring guide. The stand is fitted to stabilise the unit and the fuel burner filled with fuel gel or solid fuel tablets creating an emergency cooker.

The candle lamp folds down and the cooker ring. stand and fuel burner lock together and the complete product (together with its fuel requirements for an average four day excursion) packs into a compact three part carry case.

The complete product is made up of the following components:- -a glass mantle-housing unit (Figure A : 1) -an outer casing (Figure A: 2) -a spring-loaded candle holder (Figure A: 3) -a base (Figure A: 4) -a stand (Figure D: lc) -a cooker ring (Figure D: la) -a fuel burner (Figure D: 2a) -a moz-pad clip (Figure E) -a reflector (Figure F) -a candle case (Figure G) -a cam bag (Figure H) GLASS MANTLE-HOUSING UNIT (FIGURE A: 1) This unit comprises of a mantle rim (c) which carries a heat deflector (b) (that swings open and closed in a horizontal plane by means of a single off-centre pivot point). a carry handle (a) and three mantle claws (d) which hold in place the heat resistant cylindrical glass (e). The mantle rim also supports the cooker ring in standby mode and carries the moquito repelling attachment by means of three moz-pad locating holes.

The mantle unit extends telescopically from the outer casing into which it locks by means of three sprung mantle claws in its open configuration (Figure C). The glass protects the flame from the wind and the heat deflector protects the hand while carrying the lamp (as well as any material above the lamp when hanging) from excessive heat. The heat deflector swings open to light the lamp and is left open when using the cooker ring in standbv mode or to release smoke if necessary. The carry handle apart from its primat function. folds down and locks the lamp in its closed configuration (Figure B) for compact storage and safekeeping.

PAGE 2-DESCRIPTION THE OUTER CASING (FIGURE A: 2) The outer casing attaches to the base by means of bayonet fittings (d). Three vent holes (c) allow air into the lamp to prevent oxygen starvation of the candle. Three mantle claw apertures (b) at 120 degrees to each other allow the mantle claws to snap-lock into the outer casing. These claws are guided when opening and closing the lamp by the claw guides (a) which are cut out of the folded top edge of the casing.

THE SPRING-LOADED CANDLE HOLDER (FIGURE A: 3) The candle holder locks into the base by means of bayonet fittings (a). The top edge of the holder is folded over to retain the candle which is held at the top of the candle holder by the spring (b) as it burns away. The flange turns the molten wax in on itself preventing wax from dripping and ensuring the candle completely burns away.

THE BASE (FIGURE A: 4) The base comprises of a spring guide (b) and a plastic base (c). The spring guide locks into the base and facilitates the loading of the lamp by guiding the spring as it is compressed under the candle. The fuel burner attaches to the top of the spring guide bv means of bayonet slots (a) when in emergency cooker mode. The base has an outer and inner rim to fit the outer casing and spring guide respectively-these are pierced by bayonet pins (d) that engage the bayonet slots of the outer casing, spring guide and candle holder. An inner locating hub centralises the spring which is locked into the base under the bavonet pins. The splined edge (e) provides a non-slip grip with indentations designed to allow the carry handle to lock into them when the lamp is closed.

THE STAND (FIGURE D: lc) The base of the lamp press-fits into the stand. This stand'has three purposes-firstly. to stabilise the unit in any configuration-secondly. to increase the wind resistance by shielding the airvents and thirdly. to control the air flow into the lamp by rotating the stand to close or expose the ainents. The more the air flow is restricted. the higher the flame will bum. It is also designed to lock together with the cooker ring and fuel burner for compact storage in a cambag that attaches to the deluxe carrybag by means of an elastic.

THE COOKER RING (FIGURE D: la) The cooker ring fits directly onto the outer casing and is used in conjunction with the fuel burner turning the lamp into an emergency cooker. However. it can also be fitted onto the mantle rim and used with candle power. In this case three spring clips (Figure D: lb) are locked into the portion of the mantle claws that protrude from the outer casing thus preventing the lamp from closing with the weight of a pot placed on it. Under candle power the heat deflector is in its open position. The stand is used in both configurations to stabilise the unit.

PAGE 3-DESCRIPTION THE FUEL BURNER (FIGURE D: 2a) The candle holder is removed and the fuel burner is fitted to the top of the spring guide and used in conjunction with the cooker ring and stand. The glass mantle unit is removed and the cooker ring fitted directly onto the outer casing and the stand fitted to the base. The burner is fuelled by a purpose-made fuel gel or solid fuel tablets thus converting the lamp into an effective emergency cooker.

THE MOZ-PAD CLIP (FIGURE E) The moz-pad clip is an accessory that fits into the mantle rim by means of three locating holes (Figure E: a). The clip holds an impregnated mosquito pad that is activated by the heat of the lamp and emits an insect repelling odour. The clip is used with the heat deflector in its closed position.

THE REFLECTOR (FIGURE F) The reflector is a curved mirror-like accessory that hooks onto the inside of the glass and reflects the light back creating a magnified directional light source as opposed to a 360 degree light source. This accessory is designed to be used when reading. walking with the lamp hand-held or to screen light while sleeping with the moz-pad clip operational.

THE CANDLE CASE (FIGURE G) The candle case is a plastic container with space for three candles (d), a moz-pad clip (a) and a cleaning stick (c). A section of extruded plastic (b) partitions the case separating the candles and providing spaces for legs of the moz-pad clip as well as the cleaning stick. It provides protection and insulation from heat for the candles as well as compact storage for the moz-pad and cleaning stick.

THE CARRYBAG (FIGURE H) This is made up of three bags designed to provide compact storage for the complete product and its fuel requirements for a four day excursion. See Figure H: 4. The deluxe carrybag (Figure H: 1) carries a candle lamp in its drawstring bag (a), a candle case (b), a lighter (c) and mosquito pads in a netting pouch (d). The emergency cooker bag (Figure H: 2) carries the cooker ring, stand and fuel burner to convert the lamp into an emergency cooker. This bag attaches by means of an elastic to the deluxe carrvbag. See Figure H: 4. Fuel gel can be attached to the back of the deluxe bag with this same elastic. See Figure H: 4. The drawstring bag (Figure H: 3) protects the lamp itself.
