Abstract:

The present invention provides a multicore fiber which can suppress the cutoff wavelength of a specific core becoming longer while reducing crosstalk between cores. A multicore fiber (100) is provided with a clad (40) and a plurality of core elements (10b, 23a) which are provided in the clad (40) and includes cores (11, 21), inner side clad layers (12, 22) for surrounding the cores (11, 21), and low refraction index layers (13b, 23a) which surround the inner side clad layers (12, 22) while having a lower average refraction index than the clad (40) and the inner side clad layers (12, 22). The plurality of core elements (13b, 23a) are arranged such that the specific core element (13b) is surrounded by three or more core elements (23a), and the low refraction index layer (13b) of the core element (10b) that is a part of the plurality of core elements (13b, 23a) is configured to have the confinement loss of light that is greater than the low refraction index layer (23b) of the core element (20a) that is another part of the plurality of core elements (13b, 23a).
