Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to provide: a multicore optical fiber having four cores with a clad diameter standard of 125±1 μm in an existing single-mode optical fiber and capable of coping with transmission over a distance of several thousands of kilometers; a method of designing the multicore optical fiber; and an optical transmission method using the same. In the multicore optical fiber according to the present invention, two-stage clads having different refractive indices are arranged around each core, wherein a core radius a1, a radius a2 of a first clad region surrounding each core, a specific refractive index Δ1 of the first clad region to a core, and a specific refractive index Δ2 of a second clad region to a core are set to predetermined ranges, the second clad region including the four cores and the first clad region.
