Description:
Multiscreen electronic agenda

The invention regards a portable computer, in particular but not exclusively that more commonly known as a notebook, i.e. an electronic agenda of limited physical size, substantially on the order of that of a book with small thickness, and very light in order to facilitate the use and transport thereof during work activities without overly tiring the professional who uses it.

Such notebooks have practically replaced normal paper agendas due to their operating potentialities: as a minimum, they comprise a software that includes a writing program for the drafting of texts, an electronic sheet for making calcula- tions, even complex ones, a program for archiving documents and the subsequent retrieval of the archived documents, an electronic mail program and a program for the connection with websites of various nature made accessible by means of the Internet network. Normally, such notebooks appear as a rigid box with parallelepiped shape, in which one surface, the cover of the book, com- prises a peripheral frame which delimits a plate, the screen, on which the software projects the results of its processing. Along the frame, in the zone that defines the thickness of the notebook, the so-called "ports" are present which allow the connection with external devices that interact with the programs contained in the notebook, e.g. mouse, external keyboard, auxiliary monitor, jack for the telephone connection or USB flash drives for the connection with mass memories, and other uses well-known for some time by users of these systems. During the use of these notebooks, it often occurs that the professional must consult or work on data contained in different programs, e.g. have simultaneous access to a video-writing program and to a calculation program. The software contained in the notebook offers this opportunity since it allows presenting the results processed by a program in a limited area of the screen, i.e. inside a win- dow whose dimensions can be modified as desired by the user, in a manner such to be able to arrange two or more windows on the screen, each relative to a different work program.

Nevertheless, according to the perception of the Applicant, the current solution does not completely resolve the underlined problem, as the professional desires and requires, since each window of area smaller than the screen reduces the quantity of data visible in the respective area, rendering the work of the professional difficult.

Now, therefore, the Applicant has found that the described drawbacks can be prevented with a new type of notebook provided with a plurality of screens, each intended for the operation of a single program.

Object of the invention is therefore a portable computer, of the type known as a notebook, provided with a plurality of screens, all supported by the same interaction device, but each intended to present the data processed by a specific program, active in combination with one or more different programs.

Further characteristics and advantages of the invention will be clearer from the detailed description of a preferred but not exclusive embodiment of a notebook according to the present invention.

Such description will be set forth hereinbelow with reference to a preferred embodiment of said notebook, in the following description identified as electronic agenda, for which the enclosed drawings are provided, only for exemplifying and therefore non-limiting purposes:

- figure 1 illustrates, in front view, the electronic agenda according to the invention in the version with two interconnected pages;

- figure 2 illustrates in perspective view the agenda of figure 1 ;

- figure 3 illustrates in front view, according to a plane orthogonal to the surface of the page, the agenda of figure 1 in closed position;

- figure 4 illustrates, in plan view, the electronic agenda according to the inven- tion in the version with three interconnected pages;

- figure 5 illustrates in front view, according to a plane orthogonal to the surface of the page, the agenda of figure 4 in closed position;

- figure 6 illustrates in perspective view the electronic agenda of figure 1 with the two pages interconnected respectively along the upper edge of one page and the lower edge of the associated page;

- figure 7 illustrates in perspective view the electronic agenda of the invention with three pages connected in a manner so as to allow a rotated arrangement, with respect to a central page, of the two associated pages, accord- ing to a rotation axis parallel to the upper edge of said central page.

With reference to figure 1 , the agenda according to the invention comprises a first page 1 for receiving and processing data and for displaying the results of said processing, hereinbelow in the present description defined as main page. The aforesaid page comprises a box 2 with parallelepiped shape, preferably rectangular, which has a pair of opposite surfaces 3 and 4, separated from each other by a plurality of opposite and parallel sides 5 arranged along the edges of said surfaces, one of said surfaces comprising a screen 6 for the display of said results. Such screen is a plate made of suitable material on which, in an entirely known manner, the data processed by the processor inserted in the agenda is displayed. The screen is surrounded by a frame 7 of normally different material, which defines and delimits the surface of the box within which the screen is inserted. Light indicators 8 or intervention elements 9, e.g. buttons, can be present on this frame, for signaling and governing the operation of the agenda. According to the invention, said main page 1 is connected with a second page 10 along one edge thereof; said second page is foldable as a book (figure 3) on the main page, and substantially appears similar to the same. In reality, the two pages are preferably different, since the box of the main page contains the hardware and the software in order to operate on both pages while the box of the page 10 contains only the hardware possibly necessary for the display of the processing developed by the processors contained in the box of the main page. As a consequence of the different constitution of the two pages, the box of the page 10 can be much thinner than the box of the main page and even be limited to a laminar structure, preferably also provided with a certain flexibility. It does not seem necessary here to dwell upon what is intended by hardware, software and other terms mentioned herein, specific terms of the art (port, processor, etc.), since they are well-known and due to the fact that the agenda ac- cording to the invention uses items of the state of the art.

The result of the processing of the software loaded in the agenda must be able to appear on the screen of both pages; nevertheless, preferably, different processing will appear at the same time on the pages of the agenda, as will be stated in more detail below: more precisely, the results of the current processing will appear on one screen, preferably that of the central page, while the result of a previously executed processing, so that it can be consulted while processing is underway, will appear on the screen of the associated page.

For the purpose of being able to move the display of the current processing from one page of the agenda to the other, a device is preferably present on the frame of each page; such device is for example a key 19 that retrieves the display of the current processing on the corresponding screen.

As an alternative to the aforesaid device, when the screen is of touch screen type, i.e. "sensitive to the touch", it will suffice to touch the screen, possibly in a limited and predefined area 20, in order to retrieve the display of the current processing thereon.

Preferably, at least one of the screens of the pages of the agenda is a screen of touch screen type.

In an alternative embodiment (figure 6), the connection between two pages of the agenda, with said pages of rectangular form, is obtained along the short sides of said pages.

Preferably, the agenda according to the invention comprises (figure 4) a third page 11 connected with said first and second page.

Such third page is entirely similar to the page 10 and for this reason the same considerations set forth above with reference to said page 10 are also valid here.

Said third page is preferably connected to said main page along the edge of the same opposite the edge of connection with said second page. Thus, the main page can occupy any place in the series of the three side-by-side pages.

Figure 5 illustrates the agenda, in the embodiment version with three pages, the central page being the main page, closed and in non-use position.

Still according to the invention, on at least one of the sides of the pages of the agenda, still more preferably on one of the sides of said main page, ports 21 are provided for the connection with an auxiliary keyboard 12, and/or with an auxiliary screen, not illustrated, and/or with a mouse 13, and/or with a device 14 for the electrical power supply of said agenda, and/or with a mass memory device, not illustrated, and/or with a printer 15.

In any case, one page of the agenda, preferably said main page, comprises - inside the corresponding box - a battery for the electrical power supply of said agenda.

Still according to the invention, the software loaded in the agenda displays on the screen of at least one of said pages, preferably the main page, a hidden keyboard for interacting with the software loaded in said agenda.

In a further different embodiment (figure 7) in an agenda with three pages, the connection between the three pages does not extend over the entire length of the pages involved but is concentrated in a narrow zone on each page, and is supported by a structure capable of being bent and twisted so as to allow the rotation of the pages around a common rotation axis R-R, parallel to one side thereof, and the arrangement of the pages as illustrated in the figure, with the central page in substantially horizontal position and the two lateral pages raised like a stand, in substantially vertical position, arranged on opposite sides of the central page.

The invention solves the stated problems and attains various advantages that increase the practicality of use of the described agenda. For example (figure 4) it is possible to process a descriptive text with word processor program that shows the progress of the work on the screen of the main page, simultaneously maintaining in view a drawing table 17 and an electronic calculation sheet 18, on the associated pages, one per page; in such a manner, it is possible to enjoy the full screen display for each of the three processing items, instead of having to settle for a limited vision in a window simultaneously active on the same screen where the word processor operates.

In the present description, not all of the possible structural and size alternatives to the specifically described invention embodiments were normally illustrated: indeed, it did not seem necessary to describe the structural details of the sys- tern of the invention in more detail, since no man skilled in the art, after the instructions given herein, will have difficulty in designing the most advantageous technical solution, suitably selecting materials, size, hardware and software. Nevertheless, these variants are equally intended to be comprised in the protective scope of the present patent, such alternative embodiments being per se easily derivable from the description made herein of the relation that links each embodiment with the result that the invention wishes to obtain.
