This invention relates to a filtration apparatus for detecting contaminants contained in a lubricant and a hydraulic working oil. This apparatus includes a bottom having an oil reservoir at its lower part and an opening communicating with external air on its side surface; a plurality of elements each having a hole communicating with the oil reservoir of the bottom and connected onto the bottom; a head having an inlet for a sample oil and connected onto the elements, in a multistage arrangement; and a plurality of filters having mutually different filtration grain sizes and disposed in series. An opening is formed in the side wall of each element so as to communicate with its hole and an oil receiver communicating with this hole is inserted into each element. Therefore, necessary kinds of contaminant particles having mutually different sizes can all be collected in accordance with their sizes in one filtration operation, and an oil not containing the contaminant particles of sizes exceeding a predetermined level can be separated. A plurality of kinds of these separated oils can be produced in one filtration operation.
