Abstract:
This invention provides a negative electrode for a rechargeable battery with
a nonaqueous electrolyte, which negative electrode comprises an active material
layer containing a material that can occlude and release lithium. When the material
is subjected to Raman spectrometry as measured in the thicknesswise direction
of the active material layer after charge/discharge of the negative electrode,
the average peak position of a peak of a Raman spectrum is shifted in the range of
-10.5 to -40.5 cm-1 relative to the reference peak position of the Raman
spectrum of the material. Preferably, the active material layer contains particles
of the material, and a metal material having a low capability of forming a lithium
compound has been penetrated into among the particles. Preferably, the metal
material has been precipitated and penetrated by electroplating using a copper
pyrophosphate bath or an alkaline nickel bath. According to the above constitution,
a negative electrode for a rechargeable battery with a nonaqueous electrolyte
can be provided which can allow the active material to contribute homogeneously
to an electrode reaction over the whole area in the thicknesswise direction of
the active material layer.
