The problems to be solved by the present invention are to provide a liquid crystal composition with which the degradation of viscosity that accompanies an increase in Δn and an increase in Δε is controlled, and to provide a liquid crystal display element having a considerably improved response speed as a result of using the liquid crystal composition. A liquid crystal composition according to the present invention is characterized in that Δn is large and Δε is negative and the absolute value thereof is large. Moreover, the liquid crystal composition has a low η and excellent liquid crystallinity, and exhibits a liquid crystal phase that is stable over a broad temperature range. Furthermore, the liquid crystal composition is a practical and highly reliable composition that makes low-voltage driving possible, because the composition is chemically stable in the presence of heat, light, water, and the like.
