Abstract:

Provided is a Ni-plated steel sheet which has excellent pressability and is highly inhibited from causing die wear and which gives an alkali battery that can retain the battery characteristics even after a lapse of time. The Ni-plated steel sheet for battery cans which has excellent pressability is characterized by having, on the surface corresponding to the outer surface of a battery can, an Fe-Ni diffusion layer and a Ni layer overlying the diffusion layer and further having a semi-glossy Ni deposit layer formed thereon, the amount of Ni deposited in the Fe-Ni diffusion layer and in the overlying Ni layer being equal to or less than the amount of the semi-glossy Ni deposit layer, and the amount of the semi-glossy Ni deposit layer being 2.25 g/m2 or more. The steel sheet is further characterized in that the surface of the semi-glossy Ni deposit layer has a surface roughness Ra1, determined through an examination of 2.5 µm × 2.5 µm area with an atomic force microscope, in the range of 3-11 nm, and the surface roughness Ra of the semi-glossy Ni deposit layer includes a surface roughness Ra2, determined with a stylus type roughness meter, of 0.3-2.0 µm.
