Abstract:

Disclosed are a red phosphor having good emission characteristics and a light-emitting device using such a red phosphor. Specifically disclosed is a europium-activated nitride phosphor which absorbs light from near ultraviolet to blue and emits red light. This nitride phosphor is represented by the following general formula: M_wAl_xSi_yB_zN_{((2/3)w + x + (4/3)y + z)}:Eu²⁺ wherein M represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba, and w, x, y and z satisfy 0.056 ≤ w ≤ 9, x = 1, 0.056 ≤ y ≤ 18 and 0.0005 ≤ z ≤ 0.5. The average particle diameter of this nitride phosphor is preferably not less than 2 μm and not more than 15 μm. Also disclosed is a light-emitting device comprising an excitation source having a first emission spectrum which emits light from near ultraviolet to blue, and one or more phosphors which absorb at least a part of the first emission spectrum and emit a second emission spectrum. The above-described nitride phosphor can be used as a phosphor in this light-emitting device.
