Abstract:
A noncrystalline composite alkali metal titanate composition which comprises at least 60 wt.% alkali metal titanate represented by the general formula M2O nTiO2 (wherein M is one or more alkali metal elements and n is a number of 1 to 4) and at least 10 wt.% SiO2 and satisfies M2O/SiO2≤2.5. It is chemically stable, has excellent resistance to moisture absorption, and is suitable for use as a base for friction materials. If desired, the composition can further contain an oxide of at least one member selected from the group consisting of B, Mg, Al, P, Ca, and Zn and/or an oxide of at least one member selected from the group consisting of V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Y, Zr, Nb, and Ba.
