Abstract:
Provided are carotenoid derivatives having exceptional hydrophilicity and oral absorptivity. A carotenoid-related compound represented by the formula (in the formula, X represents a carbonyl group or a methylene group, and Z1 and Z2 are the same or different and represent a group selected from (a), (b), (c), and (d) below: (a) a hydroxy group (however, Z1 and Z2 are not simultaneously hydroxy groups); (b) -OR1 (R1 represents an optionally substituted hydrocarbon group or the like); (c) -SR2 (R2 represents an optionally substituted hydrocarbon group or the like); (d) -NR3R4 (R3 represents a hydrogen atom, an optionally substituted hydrocarbon group, or the like, R4 represents a hydrogen atom, an optionally substituted hydrocarbon group, or the like, and R3 and R4 may form a heterocycle together with nitrogen atoms)), pharmacologically acceptable salts thereof, or pharmacologically acceptable esters or amides thereof.
