Phenylpropionic acid derivatives represented by the general formula (1): (1) (2−1) [wherein A is a group represented by the general formula (2−1) or the like&semi R10 to R13 are each hydrogen or the like&semi Arm is a benzene ring or the like&semi R9 is oxygen or the like&semi B is hydroxyl or the like&semi D is optionally substituted aryl or the like&semi E is C=O or CHOH&semi G−G’ is CH−CH₂ or C=CH&semi and J and J’ are each hydrogen or the like]. The derivatives (1) exhibit &agr 4 integrin inhibiting activity and are useful as therapeutic or preventive agents for various diseases in which &agr 4 integrin participates, e.g., inflammatory diseases in which integrin−dependent adhesion participates.
