Novel proteins characterized by having a virus activation protease activity and DNA encoding these proteins. More particularly speaking, a protein characterized by containing in its molecule the amino acid sequence corresponding to the amino acids at the 1- to 247-positions in the sequence represented by SEQ ID NO:2 in Sequence Listing, and having a virus activation protease activity; or a protein characterized by containing in its molecule an amino acid sequence derived from the above-described sequence by addition, deletion or substitution of one or more amino acids and having a virus activation protease activity. Preventives for infectious diseases such as influenza can be searched by performing a test with the use of the activity of the above proteins as an indication.
