Abstract:
Provided are: an oil modification method capable of improving the fluidity of oil such as plant or animal oil or fat used as a raw material for biodiesel fuel, and other mineral oils, using a low-cost and simple method; and an oil modifying agent used in said method. The oil modification method improves the fluidity of the oil and has: a heating step (S1) in which the oil is heated to a temperature greater than the melting temperature of the oil component; and modification steps (S2 to S5) in which an oil modification agent including a silicon sol is added to the oil, and same is agitated while the oil temperature is maintained at a temperature higher than the melting temperature of the oil. Said silicon sol comprises a silicon-containing solute that contains silicon and calcium and has been dissolved in an acid solvent.
