Abstract:
Provided is a multiple-piece type oil ring that is to be installed on the piston of an internal combustion engine, and that comprises a ring body with a rail and an expander. The rail of the ring body has a film formed by a physical vapor deposition process. The outer peripheral surface of the rail formed by the film includes an actual contact surface that is formed in a band shape extending in the circumferential direction and that contacts and slides on the inner wall surface of the cylinder of the internal combustion engine, and an inclined surface that is continuous from an axial edge of the actual contact surface to the axially outer side thereof, the distance of the inclined surface from the inner wall surface increasing toward the axially outer side. The inclined surface is constituted by a surface obtained by polishing or grinding the surface of the film along the circumferential direction. Thus, sliding resistance of the oil ring is reduced to achieve a further improvement in fuel economy.
