An operating mechanism for a circuit breaker. The operating mechanism comprises an operating assembly (2), a transmission mechanism (4) and a locking mechanism (5), wherein the operating assembly (2) comprises a support member (21) and a rotary member (22) rotatably mounted on the support member (21), the rotary member (22) being provided with a first limiting position and a second limiting position in a rotation direction. The operating mechanism for a circuit breaker is provided with the operating assembly (2), the transmission mechanism (4) and the locking mechanism (5) to form a transmission chain and a locking chain; an arc extinguishing device (3) is arranged beneath, that is, the arc extinguishing device (3) extends in the length direction of the circuit breaker; and with respect to an arc extinguishing device extending in the height direction of the circuit breaker in the prior art, the arc extinguishing device (3) of the present application can occupy a larger space, and can thus break higher short-circuit currents.
