Abstract:
Provided are an optical amplifier, an optical amplifier controlling method and an optical transmission system wherein the wavelength dependency of signal gains can be reduced with the efficiency of using supplied-power sources improved. An optical amplifier according to the present invention amplifies incident Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) signals and has two or more cores each consisting of an amplification medium, the optical amplifier comprising: a wavelength branching means that branches the incident WDM signals into two or more wavelength bands and that introduces the two or more wavelength bands to the respective ones of the two or more cores; a wavelength multiplexing means that multiplexes the optical signals having propagated through the two or more cores and having been amplified and that outputs the multiplexed signal; and the multiplexing by a wavelength branching control means that monitors the amplification rate of the particular wavelength band of each amplified WDM signal and a scale associated with the amplification rate of the particular wavelength band and that controls the branching by the wavelength branching means in such a manner that branches, from among the incident WDM signals, optical signals having wavelength bands the optical amplification efficiencies of which are relatively small according to the monitoring results and such that those optical signals having wavelength bands the optical amplification efficiencies of which are relatively small are amplified with relatively large amplification rates.
