Abstract:
Provided is an optical assembly for a head-mounted display, comprising, in order from a light source side: a light deflecting element which changes the direction of progress of light from the light source; a first lens group having an overall positive optical power, which is configured of a plurality of rotationally symmetrical lenses which are formed as rotationally symmetrical with respect to an optical axis and a free-form surface lens which is formed as rotationally asymmetrical with respect to the optical axis, said first lens group collecting the light which has entered via the light deflecting element; a second lens group which is configured of one lens which is positioned near an image forming location of an intermediate image formed by the first lens group and has a positive optical power; a third lens group which is configured of one rotationally symmetrical lens which is formed as rotationally symmetrical with respect to the optical axis and a free-form surface lens which is formed as rotationally asymmetrical with respect to the optical axis; and a light reflecting element which has a reflecting surface which is a free-form surface shape which is formed as rotationally asymmetrical with respect to the optical axis and reflects the light which has traversed the third lens group. According to the change in the direction of progress of the light from the light source by the light deflecting element, the light which is reflected with the reflecting surface and reaches a rendering surface which is assumed to be located upon the retina of a user moves upon the rendering surface and an image is rendered upon the rendering surface.
