Abstract:

The region (6a) along and near the axis of the core (6) of a single mode optical fiber (5) has a refractive index higher than that of the peripheral region (6b) of the cove, and the regions (6a, 6b) contain a dopant component concentratedly. With this, the dependence the mode field diameter on wavelength is increased. The proportion of the optical signal energy subjected to attenuation is thereby varied and the dependence of the optical attenuation of the dopant component on wavelength is canceled or increased. Consequently, the optical attenuation of an optical signal having a small wavelength difference can be constant, or the difference of optical attenuation due to difference of wavelength can be increased while limiting the concentration and dopant-containing region within a realizable range.
