This optical device is provided with a first A-polarization member 31, a first B-polarization member 32, a first C-polarization member 33, a second A-polarization member 41, a second B-polarization member 42, and a second C-polarization member 43, wherein: a portion of light emitted from an image forming device enters the first A-polarization member 31, and is emitted therefrom toward the pupils of an observer via the first B-polarization member 32 and the first C-polarization member 33, while at least the remaining portion of the light emitted from the image forming device enters the second A-polarization member 41 and is emitted therefrom toward the pupils of the observer via the second B-polarization member 42 and the second C-polarization member 43; and a direction determined by orthographically projecting the propagation direction of the light polarized by the first A-polarization member 31 onto a light guide plate is oriented opposite to a direction determined by orthographically projecting the propagation direction of the light polarized by the second A-polarization member 41 onto a light guide plate.
