Abstract:
The purpose of the present embodiment is to provide an optical device which is capable of modulation at low voltage. The optical device according to the present embodiment is provided with: a light source; a first substrate that has a first side surface facing the light source and has a first refractive index; a second substrate that faces the first substrate; and a liquid crystal layer that is provided between the first substrate and the second substrate and has optical anisotropy. The first refractive index of the first substrate is greater than the ordinary refractive index of the liquid crystal layer and is substantially the same as the extraordinary refractive index of the liquid crystal layer.
