Abstract:
Disclosed is an optical fiber base material used in a method for inserting a core rod that forms a core into a silica tube that forms a clad and drawing the silica tube into which the core rod is inserted, and simultaneously integrating the silica tube and the core rod. Said optical fiber base material is provided with: a tapered portion formed by grinding the outer periphery of the leading end of the silica tube in a tapered shape; and a conical portion formed by welding a dummy tube having approximately the same outer diameter as the outer diameter of the leading end of the tapered portion to the leading end of the tapered portion and heating and extending the dummy tube, and the core rod is inserted into the silica tube.
