Abstract:
[Problem] To provide an optical fiber cable having a protective structure for an optical fiber connection portion wherein a protective structure part of a reduced diameter can be easily produced without needing to use a metal rod and a heat-shrink tube, and a method of manufacture therefor. [Solution] Provided is an optical fiber cable comprising: a connection portion 3 formed between two optical fibers 10A, 10B that are constituted by an optical fiber 1 and a coating material 2 that covers the optical fiber 1, wherein the optical fibers 10A, 10B are connected to each other with the tips of the optical fibers 1 exposed by removing the tips of the coating material 2 being butt-welded together; a cured resin 4 provided around the connection portion 3 to give the same or substantially the same outer diameter as the outer diameter of the portion of the optical fiber to which the coating material 2 is applied; a metal pipe 6 provided around the cured resin 4 with an adhesive layer 5 sandwiched therebetween; and an outer sheath 7 made of a resin tube or an extruded resin layer covering the entire optical fiber cable including the metal pipe 6 along the longitudinal direction.
