Disclosed is an optical fibre cutting method, comprising: stripping a layer clad on an optical fibre (10) and cleaning an exposed bare optical fibre (110); cutting a cut-out (111) in the bare optical fibre (110); coating a pre-determined amount of a damping medium (200) on the bare optical fibre (110) such that a segment of the bare optical fibre containing the cut-out (111) is wrapped by the coated damping medium (200); and breaking the bare optical fibre (110) along the cut-out (111) by applying a lateral force or a lateral pressure (F). By applying a layer of the damping medium (200) on the surface of the optical fibre (10), the stress distribution on an end face of the optical fibre is smoothed during cutting and breaking, and influence from external accidental factors can be better prevented. Therefore, improved cutting quality for the end face of the cut optical fibre is achieved, that is to say, the deviation of a cutting angle of the end face is minimised and the structural integrity of the cut end face is improved.
