This optical film has a substrate and a phase difference layer provided on and adjacent to the substrate, the phase difference layer being a layer obtained by fixing the vertical orientation of a liquid crystalline compound included in a liquid crystal composition containing a polymer compound and a liquid crystalline compound having a polymerizable group, the difference in the δa value between the polymer compound and the substrate calculated using a three-dimensional SP value being 3 or less, the polymer compound being a polymer having repeating units represented by formula (I), and the content of the polymer compound being 2-10 parts by mass with respect to 100 parts by mass of the liquid crystalline compound. In formula (I) herein, R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, X represents –O- or –NH-, and R2 represents a hydrogen agom or an active hydrogen-containing group.
