Abstract:
The present invention provides: an optical film which has large phase difference values in the thickness direction, in which the average angle of inclination, with respect to a support body surface, of a circular plate of discotic liquid crystal compounds is horizontal, and which has few orientation defects and large refractive index anisotropy in the thickness direction; an optical member; a backlight device; and a display device. This optical film includes a support body and an optically anisotropic layer formed from a polymerizable liquid crystal composition that contains discotic liquid crystal compounds; the polymerizable liquid crystal composition includes discotic liquid crystal compounds of two types and a polymer that includes prescribed constituent units in prescribed quantity ratios; the in-plane phase difference Re(550) of the optically anisotropic layer at a wavelength of 550 nm is 0–10 nm; the phase difference Rth(550) in the thickness direction of the optically anisotropic layer at a wavelength of 550 nm is 200–700 nm; and the optically anisotropic layer is formed by the hardening of the discotic liquid crystal compounds in a horizontal orientation.
