This invention provides a resin composition for an optical material that can produce an optical correction film which, when used, for example, in liquid crystal display devices, does not cause a significant birefringent index distribution caused by the deviation of external force, is excellent in uniformity in contrast, can widen the view angle, and can enhance the contrast. The resin composition comprises a copolymer (1) of a monomer (a) having a positive photoelastic coefficient and a negative intrinsic birefringent index with a monomer (b) having a negative photoelastic coefficient and a negative intrinsic birefringent index. There is also provided a resin composition for an optical material, comprising a thermoplastic resin (A) having a negative photoelastic coefficient and a low-molecular compound (B) which tends to increase the photoelastic coefficient to a higher value than that of the thermoplastic resin (A).
