Abstract:
An optical head device includes: light source means for emitting a laser beam
for each of a plurality of n types (n is an integer not smaller than 3) of optical
discs; a first objective lens for collecting the laser beam emitted from the light
source means onto a recording surface of an i-th type (i is an integer not greater
than n) of optical disc and a second objective lens for collecting the laser beam
onto a recording surface of a j-th type (j is a natural number not greater than n
and different from i) of optical disc; one light reception element for receiving
a signal light from the recording surface; and an optical system for introducing
a common laser beam shared by the both optical discs among the laser beams to the
first objective lens if the polarization state of the common laser beam is in a
first state and to the second objective lens if the polarization state is in a second
state, introducing a non-common laser beam for the k-th type of optical disc to
the second objective lens, and introducing the signal light to the light reception
element; and polarization switching means capable of switching the polarization
state to the first or the second state.
