Abstract:
An optical integrated element is provided with: a passive waveguide region in which a second core layer, a lower cladding layer, a first core layer, and an upper cladding layer are successively stacked on a substrate; and an active region in which a second core layer, a lower cladding layer, a first core layer, a quantum well layer which amplifies light by being injected with electric current, and an upper cladding layer are successively stacked on a substrate. The first core layer and the quantum well layer are proximate to each other in the range of a mode field of light being guided in the first core layer. At least a part of the passive waveguide region and the active region have a first mesa structure in which the upper cladding layer protrudes in a mesa shape. The passive waveguide region includes, in addition to the first mesa structure, a second spot-size conversion region having a second mesa structure in which the first core layer, the lower cladding layer, and the second core layer protrude in a mesa shape. The second mesa structure has a width greater than a width of the first mesa structure. In the passive waveguide region having the second mesa structure, the width of the first mesa structure is continuously varied.
