Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to provide an optical modulator capable of reducing electric loss of a wiring portion of a control electrode and suppressing application of an electric field to an optical waveguide by the wiring portion and crosstalk between electric signals, and capable of suppressing conduction of heat generated by a driver element disposed on a relay substrate to an operation part of the optical modulator. An optical modulator comprises: a housing 7 that houses therein an electrooptical substrate 1 on which an optical waveguide 2 and a control electrode 30 are formed, and a relay substrate (5, 51, 52) on which a relay line (501, 511, 521) is formed; an electric signal input part that is disposed on one short side side (left-hand side of Fig. 2) of the housing; and an optical input part and an optical output part that are disposed on the other short side side (right-hand side of Fig. 2) of the housing. The optical modulator is characterized in that the relay substrate 5 has a driver element 60 and is provided with a relay substrate portion 51 disposed along one long side side of the electrooptical substrate 1, and the relay line and the control electrode are electrically connected on the one long side side.
