Abstract:
Provided is a method for controlling a variable spread compensator which can be accurately controlled with a cheap configuration and even under a high SNR condition in an optical receiver of a long-distance high-speed WDM/OADM system. The method acquires signal reception characteristic data (code error ratio, clock extraction enabled/disabled result, frame synchronization enabled/disabled result) and derives an optimal spread compensation amount of the spread compensator.  When these signal reception characteristic data are saturated because of a high SNR and it is impossible to obtain a desired spread control accuracy, the input level of a photodiode is lowered by controlling the output level of an amplifier or a variable-light attenuator, so as to acquire the signal reception characteristic data in the state of degraded reception SNR and re-derive the optimal spread compensation amount of the spread compensator.
