This optical receptacle is characterized by being provided with: a fiber stub which has a ferrule enclosing a light-conducting optical fiber; a retainer for holding the fiber stub; and a sleeve which at one end holds the leading end of the fiber stub and at the other end can hold the plug ferrule inserted into the optical receptacle; and is characterized in that, on the end surface of the ferrule which is polished into a convex spherical shape on the side connecting to the plug ferrule, the ferrule includes a foreign body movement suppressing unit which suppresses movement of foreign bodies from the outer periphery of the ferrule towards the center of the aforementioned end surface due to insertion and removal of the plug ferrule. When the plug ferrule is repeatedly inserted into and removed from the optical receptacle, loss due to movement of foreign bodies on the outer periphery of the fiber stub towards the center of the fiber stub end surface can be avoided, and Wiggle loss can be reduced by maintaining the length along which the sleeve holds the fiber stub.
