This invention provides an optical recording material, which can solve a problem of recording density in an optical recording medium, and an optical recording medium using the optical recording material. The optical recording material comprises a compound having a structure represented by general formula (I). The optical recording medium comprises a recording layer containing the optical recording material. There is also provided a method for reproducing a record in an optical recording medium wherein recording is carried out by photodissociating a compound constituting the optical recording material and comprising a luminescent group and a photodissociating protective group while reproduction is carried out by reading a difference in luminescence intensity between before the photodissociation and after the photodissociation. A - (X - B)n (I) wherein A represents a fluorescence emitting group upon the dissociation of B; X represents a divalent binding group; B represents a photodissociative protective group; and n is an integer of 1 to 6.
