Abstract:

There is provided a recording/reproducing method for an optical recording medium capable of selecting in-groove recording or on-groove recording according to the type of a recording medium and recording/reproducing information with a preferable signal quality. In a region where the groove width is greater than the width between grooves, a laser beam reflected by the information recording layer is received by a photo-detector divided at least into two by a division line parallel to the advance direction of the groove. According to the sum signal or the difference signal of the photo-detection signals outputted from the photo-detector divided into two portions, it is judged whether the groove has a convex shape or a concave shape toward the light incident surface side.
