An optical system 10 has a reduction-side reduction conjugate point and an enlargement-side enlargement conjugate point optically conjugate to each other, and comprises a prism having a first transmission surface T1 positioned on the enlargement side, a second transmission surface T2 positioned on the reduction side, and at least three reflection surfaces M1-M4 positioned on an optical path between the first transmission surface T1 and the second transmission surface T2. The at least three reflection surfaces include, in order in the direction from the enlargement side toward the reduction side: the first reflection surface M1 and the second reflection surface M2; and the most-reduction-side reflection surface M4, which is positioned the farthest on the reduction side. An intermediate imaging position having a conjugate relationship with each of the reduction conjugate point CP and the enlargement conjugate point is positioned inside the prism. The first reflection surface M1 is provided within a region to which a plurality of principal rays traveling through the prism are focused.
