Title:
OPTICAL TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS AND METHODS INCLUDING OPTICAL PROTECTION
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO2001091339
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
Optical transmission systems of the present invention include optical protection systems, apparatuses, and methods that provide increased reliability in the system. The optical system generally includes optical transmitters including transmitter controllers configured to vary the optical power of the transmitter, when degraded signals are detected in the system. The transmitter controller controls the transmitter to transmit an output signal in a form that indicates a degraded signal condition along the optical path of the signal. The loss of signal condition can be propagated optically through the system and used to trigger a protection switch or other desired actions at various nodes in the system. In various embodiments, optical and/or electrical switches are included in the nodes along with the transmitters and/or receivers to provide redundant paths through the system, as well as into and out of the system. Upon the detection of signal degradation or a loss of signal, the transmitter controller can shut down its associated transmitter to propagate optically the degraded signal condition to the switch. Signal monitors at the switch will detect the loss of condition at the switch and initiate protection switching.
