Provided are: an optically active trans-astaxanthin derivative or a salt thereof, which has excellent antioxidative activity, while having excellent water solubility and the like; and a composition which contains this derivative or a salt thereof with high purity. An optically active trans-astaxanthin derivative represented by formula (I) or a salt thereof. (In the formula, m1, m2, n1 and n2 may be the same as or different from each other, and each represents an integer of 1-6.)
