Abstract:
A long-term stable organic EL device using a protective layer with high visible light transmittance and excellent dampproof property and a method for manufacturing the same. The organic EL device comprises a substrate, an organic EL element formed on the substrate and including a lower electrode, an organic EL layer, an upper electrode, and a protective layer, and a protective substrate bonded onto the organic EL element by a bonding layer. The protective layer is a stack of a first layer closest to the upper electrode to an n-th layer (n is an integer of 3 or more). Each layer of the protective layer is made of silicon oxynitride or silicon nitride. Two adjacent layers of the protective layer have different chemical compositions. The first layer of the protective layer has a lower refractive index than the upper electrode. The n-th layer of the protective layer has a higher refractive index than the bonding layer. Regarding each integer k between 2 and n, the refractive index (k) of the k-th layer of the protective layer satisfies the relationship of refractive index (k-1) > refractive index (k).
