Abstract:
This organic EL element (10) has a first electrode (2), an organic layer (3) containing a light-emitting layer that comprises an organic EL material, and a second electrode (4) comprising a metal in this order on a substrate (1), and is configured to pull light from the first electrode (2) side to the outside. A high refractive index layer (7) having a refractive index that is higher than the organic layer (3) is provided between the first electrode (2) and the substrate (1). A transmissive diffraction grating (8) is provided between the outer surface (1A) of the substrate (1) and the first electrode (2). The grating interval (p) of the diffraction grating in at least one in-plane direction of the substrate satisfies mathematical formula (1) with respect to an integer (N). In the formula, ε1 represents the real part of the dielectric constant of the second electrode (4), εlow represents the dielectric constant of the organic layer (3), and λ represents the light emission peak wavelength.
