Abstract:
(1) Osmium tetraoxide carried on a polyolefin having an ion-exchange group such as a primary amino group, -NHR, -NRR', -NR'R?''+¿ (wherein R, R' and R' independently represent each alkyl, aryl or aralkyl) or sulfonate group bonded thereto; supports for carrying osmium tetraoxide which contain a polyolefin having the above-described ion-exchange group bonded thereto; and oxidation catalysts comprising osmium tetraoxide carried on such a support; (2) a process for producing a carried osmium tetraoxide by bringing such a support with osmium tetraoxide; (3) a method of storing osmium tetraoxide by carrying osmium tetraoxide on such a support; and (4) a process for producing a diol compound by treating an olefin with an oxidation catalyst comprising the carried osmium tetraoxide as described above. According to the above method, an osmium-carrying compound which can be easily handled, has an excellent solvent resistance and suffers from no decrease in the catalytic activity even after repeated use can be industrially produced.
