An outer handle device for a vehicle door, equipped with: a base member; an outer handle; a linking mechanism capable of transmitting the door-opening action of this outer handle as an action that unlatches a door latch mechanism; and a door-opening prevention mechanism that prevents the door from opening when a vehicle collision occurs, by preventing a transmitting member in the linking mechanism from transmitting the door-opening action to a receiving member in conjunction with a door-opening action of the outer handle caused by a prescribed inertial force of the door acting in a direction to the outside of the vehicle. The door-opening prevention mechanism is formed with a bending and stretching mechanism provided in the middle part of the transmitting member, and when the aforementioned inertial force acts, the bending and stretching mechanism causes the middle part of the transmitting member to bend back prior to the door-opening action of the outer handle, thereby preventing the transmitting member from transmitting the door-opening action to the receiving member. Thus, the reliability of the door-opening prevention mechanism can be increased with an inexpensive configuration.
