Description:
Packaging device for a cosmetic article and associated method

This invention relates to a device for packaging at least one cosmetic article comprising:

- a base, in which an internal storage compartment is formed, the internal storage compartment being intended to hold a cosmetic article;

- a lid mounted movable relative to the base between a closed at-rest configuration in which the lid closes the base and an open usage configuration in which the packaging device is used;

- a dish that is intended to hold a cosmetic article, the dish being mounted movable relative to the base between a storage position that it occupies in the closed at-rest position and a usage position that it occupies in the open usage configuration; and

- an insert with an active face, the active face being intended to be used for performing a cosmetic treatment.

For the purposes of this invention, "cosmetic article" means a cosmetic product which is intended to be applied on a human being, for example a solid such as a powder, a liquid or a cream.

A "cosmetic article" also includes a tool that is used to apply a cosmetic product on a part of the body, the tool for example being a brush. A "cosmetic article" may also be a cosmetic treatment tool such as a nail file.

A "cosmetic product" is generally a product such as defined in the Regulation (EC)

No. 1223/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council dated November 30, 2009 dealing with cosmetic products.

A packaging device is suitable for containing and displacing a cosmetic article for storage, sale and use. For example, the packaging device may be a case adapted to fit into a handbag.

WO 2008/028854, US 3 586 010, GB 486 708 and EP 1 510 148 disclose packaging devices for a cosmetic article in which a single compartment is available to contain a cosmetic article. These devices are not entirely satisfactory. It is often necessary to have simple and simultaneous access to a cosmetic product, for example such as a foundation powder or eye shadow, and to an applicator of this cosmetic product onto a surface of the body. It is also important that the applicator and the cosmetic product should be housed in separate compartments so that the applicator is not soiled by the cosmetic product. None of the above-mentioned devices allows access to two separately housed cosmetic articles.

US 1 837 722 discloses a packaging device for a cosmetic article comprising two compartments of cosmetic products arranged in an element which is slidably mounted inside a case. One of these compartments must be closed before the other can be opened. Therefore, this device also does not enable simultaneous access to two cosmetic articles housed separately.

WO 2007/097 480, FR 2 937 017 and US 4 580 586 disclose cases inside which two compartments of cosmetic products are accessible simultaneously. However, these cases are not fully satisfactory. They are complex to design and to assemble. The first two are also cumbersome in their usage configuration due to their opening mechanism by which a sliding element extends over a considerable length outside the base, which makes them not very practical to use.

One purpose of this invention is to provide a packaging device for at least one cosmetic article, that remains compact in its usage configuration, that is practical to manipulate and that makes it easy for the user who would like to use a cosmetic product contained in the packaging device to access the applicator without the applicator becoming soiled during storage of the packaging device.

For this purpose, the invention relates to a packaging device as described above, in which the insert is articulated to the dish through a first joint, and in which the insert is able to move the dish from its storage position to its usage position through the first joint when the lid moves from its closed at-rest configuration to its open usage configuration.

The packaging device according to the invention may comprise one or several of the following characteristics taken individually or combined in any technically possible combination:

- the first joint is movable relative to the base and relative to the lid;

- the insert comprises a mirror, the active face being a reflecting face of the mirror;

- the insert is mounted movable relative to the lid;

- the insert has a first edge and a second edge opposite the first edge, the first edge being articulated to the dish through the first joint, and the second edge being articulated to the lid through a second joint, the first edge advantageously being a back edge of the insert and the second edge advantageously being a front edge of the insert;

- the insert is articulated to a back end of the dish and the front end of the dish is movable relative to the base such that the front end of the dish moves backwards relative to a front region of the base when the lid moves from the closed at-rest configuration to the open usage configuration;

- the front end of the dish is slidably mounted on the base;

- the base comprises a guide rail and the dish comprises a guided device in the vicinity of its front end, the guided device being slidably received in the guide rail; - the lid is mounted pivotably relative to the base between the closed at-rest configuration and the open usage configuration;

- the first joint is a pivot joint between the insert and the dish;

- the second joint is a pivot joint between the insert and the lid;

- in the usage position, the dish extends along a plane inclined relative to the base;

- the device also comprises a drawer, mounted movable relative to the base between a retracted position in which it is housed in the storage compartment, and an extended position in which it projects outside the base, the dish at least partially covering the drawer in the storage position and exposing a front part of the drawer that is covered in the storage position, when it is in the usage position;

- the device does not have an internal drawer and the storage compartment delimits a receiving housing for the cosmetic article opening up facing the dish.

Another object of the invention is a method for use of a cosmetic article comprising the following steps:

- supply of a packaging device as defined above, the lid occupying its closed at- rest configuration;

- manipulate the lid to move it into its open usage configuration, the displacement of the lid from its closed at-rest configuration to its open usage configuration causing, through the first joint between the dish and the insert, a displacement of the dish from a storage position that the dish occupies in the closed at-rest position to a usage position that the dish occupies in the open usage configuration.

The invention will be better understood upon reading the following description given solely by way of example, with reference to the appended drawings in which:

- figure 1 is a sectional view of a first packaging device according to the invention, taken along a median plane, in a closed at-rest configuration;

- figure 2 is a view similar to figure 1 , in an intermediate configuration;

- figure 3 is a view similar to figure 1 , in an open usage configuration;

- figure 4 is a view similar to figure 1 , in which the storage drawer is in its extended position;

- figure 5 is a perspective view of a second packaging device according to the invention, in an open usage configuration.

Throughout the following, the term "front" means the part that will be placed closest to the user of the device in the closed storage configuration, while the term "back" means the part that will be placed furthest from the user in the closed storage configuration. Figures 1 to 4 show a first device 10 according to the invention. This device 10 is intended to contain at least one cosmetic article, and advantageously at least two cosmetic articles.

A cosmetic article contained in the device 10 may be for example a cosmetic product, intended to be applied onto a surface of the body, such as a powder, a viscous liquid or a cream.

A cosmetic article contained in the device 10 may also be a tool for applying a cosmetic product onto the surface of the body, such as an applicator consisting for example of a brush or a sponge, notably made of synthetic foam.

The first device 10 shown in Figures 1 to 4 comprises a base 12, a lid 14 mounted movable relative to the base 12, and an articulation mechanism 18 of the lid 14 relative to the base 12. The device 10 delimits at least one storage compartment 20 of a first cosmetic article, in an internal volume between the lid 14 and the base 12.

The device 10 also comprises a dish 22 intended to hold a second cosmetic article and an insert 26 with an active face intended to be used to perform a cosmetic treatment. The dish 22 is articulated to the insert 26 through a first joint 30.

The base 12 comprises a bottom wall 40 intended to be placed on a support and a peripheral wall 44 that projects upwards from the bottom wall 40. The storage compartment 20 is formed in the base 12 between the peripheral wall 44 and the bottom wall 40.

The peripheral wall 44 comprises two side regions 48, one of which can be seen in Figure 2. The side regions 48 extend on each side of a horizontal median axis A-A' of the base 12.

The lid 14 comprises an upper panel 52 and a sidewall 56 that projects from the upper panel 52 towards the base 12. The sidewall 56 has a lower free edge 60 intended to bear in contact with a free upper edge 64 of the peripheral wall 44 when the lid 14 covers the base 12. The sidewall 56 and the upper panel 52 delimit the top of a receiving space for the insert 26.

Conventionally, the lid 14 is rotatably mounted on the base 12 so as to be rotatable about a horizontal rotation axis C-C, advantageously perpendicular to the A-A' axis. The articulation mechanism 18 of the lid 14 relative to the base 12 comprises a horizontal articulation axis 68 extending along the C-C rotation axis. The articulation axis 68 is inserted through a back edge 72 of the base 12 and through a back edge 76 of the lid 14.

The lid 14 is mounted so as to be rotatable about the C-C rotation axis relative to the base 12 between a closed at-rest configuration shown in Figure 1 and an open usage configuration shown in Figure 3. In the closed at-rest configuration, the lid 14 closes off the top part of the base 12. It has a median B-B' axis approximately parallel to the A-A' axis. The free lower edge 60 of the lid 14 is applied in contact with the upper free edge 64 of the base 12. The inner space delimited between the base 12 and the lid 14 is then closed off and is inaccessible from the outside of the device 10.

In the open usage configuration, the lid 14 has pivoted by a maximum angle, for example greater than 90° and particularly greater than 120°, and more especially greater than 150 ° about the C-C rotation axis. It has been tilted backwards relative to the base 12 to release the space above the base 12.

The dish 22 comprises a peripheral wall 80 and a bottom wall 84. The peripheral wall 80 comprises a front region forming the front end 88 of the dish 22, and a back region forming the back end 92 of the dish 22. Two sidewalls 94, that may for example be approximately parallel to each other, connect the front region and the back region.

The peripheral wall 80 and the lower wall 84 together delimit a compartment 98 for housing the second cosmetic article.

The lower wall 84 of the dish 22 limits the top part of the storage compartment 20 formed in the base 12. This storage compartment 20 is delimited at the bottom by the bottom wall 40 of the base 12. It is delimited at the side by a portion of the peripheral wall 44 of the base 12 located between the bottom wall 40 of the base 12 and the lower wall 84 of the dish 22.

The length of the dish 22 along the A-A' axis is less than the length of the base 12.

In this example, the insert 26 is formed by a mirror. It comprises an active face 100 and an opposite face 102. The active face 100 is a reflecting face. The opposite face 102 is an opaque face.

The insert 26 is approximately plane. It comprises a front edge 106 located at the front of the device 10 in the closed configuration, and a back edge 108 opposite the front edge 106 and located at the back of the device 10 in the closed configuration.

The length of the insert 26 along the A-A' axis in the closed configuration is less than the length of the lid 14 and the length of the base 12.

The insert 26 is entirely located within the lid 14 in the closed configuration.

Consequently, its thickness is less than the height of the lid 14, taken perpendicular to the A-A' axis.

The insert 26 is articulated to the dish 22 by means of the first joint 30. The first joint 30 is movable relative to the base 12 and relative to the lid 14. In particular, it is able to move relative to the base 12 and relative to the lid 14 when the lid 14 moves from its closed at-rest configuration to its open usage configuration. The first joint 30 is free to move relative to the base 12 and/or the lid 14 without being guided in its displacement by the base 12 or by the lid 14.

The first joint 30 comprises a first joint zone 1 10 belonging to the dish 22 and a second joint zone 1 12 belonging to the insert 26, these two zones 1 10, 1 12 jointly forming the first joint 30.

In the example shown, the first joint 30 forms a pivot joint of axis D-D' between the dish 22 and the insert 26. The D-D' axis is approximately horizontal, advantageously perpendicular to the A-A' axis. In the example shown, the D-D' axis is approximately parallel to the C-C axis.

In the example shown, the back edge 108 of the insert 26 is articulated to the back end 92 of the dish 22 through the first joint 30.

The first joint 30 comprises a joint axis 1 14 arranged along the direction of the D-D' axis. The joint axis 1 14 is inserted through the back end 92 of the dish 22 and through the back edge 108 of the insert 26. It is movable in translation, advantageously in non- rectilinear translation, relative to the C-C axis when the lid 14 moves from its closed configuration to its open configuration or vice versa.

The insert 26 is articulated to the lid 14 through a second joint 1 16. In particular, the insert 26 is articulated to the lid 14 in the vicinity of a front end 1 15 of the lid 14. The second joint 1 16 is a pivot joint of axis E-E' between the lid 14 and the insert 26. The E-E' axis is horizontal and is approximately parallel to the D-D' axis. The E-E' axis is approximately parallel to the C-C axis. It is advantageously approximately perpendicular to the B-B' axis.

The second joint 1 16 is notably formed by a hinge between the insert 26 and the lid 14.

In the example shown, the second joint 1 16 is between the front edge 106 of the insert 26 and the lid 14. The front edge 106 of the insert 26 is fixed relative to the lid 14 along the B-B' direction.

When the lid 14 moves from its closed configuration to its open configuration, the insert 26 is configured to pivot forwards relative to the lid 14 about the E-E' axis.

In the open configuration of the lid 14, the insert 26 is inclined relative to the mean plane of the lid 14. In particular, the insert 26 is inclined forwards relative to the lid 14. The insert 26, particularly the opposite face 102 of the insert 26, forms an acute angle a with the lid 14. The angle a formed between the insert 26 and the lid 14 in the open configuration is larger than the angle a formed between the insert 26 and the lid 14 in the closed configuration. The dish 22 is movable relative to the base 12 between a storage position that it occupies when the lid 14 is in its closed configuration, and a usage position that it occupies when the lid 14 is in its open usage configuration.

In its storage position, the dish 22 extends along a mean plane approximately parallel to the bottom wall 40 of the base 12. It closes off the top of the storage compartment 20.

In its usage position, the dish 22 extends along a mean plane inclined relative to the base 12. It forms an acute angle β with the base 12. The back end 92 of the dish 22 is raised in the usage position relative to the storage position. The dish 22 further occupies a withdrawn position along the A-A' axis relative to the storage position. Thus, in its usage position, the dish 22 exposes a front part of the storage compartment 20, that it closes off in its storage position. In this usage position, the space above the front part of the storage compartment 20 is exposed forming an access passage 1 17 to the storage compartment 20.

When the lid 14 moves from the closed configuration to the open configuration, the insert 26 is capable of moving the dish 22 from its storage position to its usage position through the first joint 30.

In particular, the insert 26 is capable of moving the dish 22 backwards relative to the base 12 during displacement of the lid 14 from its closed configuration to its open configuration.

The insert 26 is also capable of tilting the dish 22 forwards about its front end 88 during displacement of the lid 14 from its closed configuration to its open configuration. It is capable of lifting the back end 92 of the dish 22 relative to the base 12 during this displacement.

Thus, during displacement of the lid 14 from its closed configuration to its open configuration, the insert 26 is capable of moving the dish 22 backwards and pivoting the dish 22 about its front end 88.

In this example, the front end 88 of the dish 22 is movable substantially along the A-A' axis relative to the base 12. This displacement is accompanied by a rotation of the dish 22 about its front end 88. The front end 88 is configured in particular to move backwards relative to a front region 1 19 of the base 12 when the lid 14 moves from its closed configuration to its open configuration.

The front end 88 of the dish 22 is for example slidably mounted on the base 12. To achieve this, the device 10 comprises for example a first guide rail 1 18 formed in the base 12 and a first guided element (not shown) borne by the dish 22 in the vicinity of its front end 88. The first guided element is received in the first guide rail 1 18 so as to be slidable relative to the first guide rail 1 18. The first rail 1 18 extends along the A-A' axis. It may be straight or curved. For example, the device 10 comprises two parallel rails, arranged on each side of the dish 22 in the facing side regions 48. Each first rail receives a first guided element, the first guided element being slidable relative to the first rail.

Each first guided element projects laterally away from the central A-A' axis relative to the dish 22. For example, it is formed by a pin that is received in the rail 1 18.

The insert 26 is also capable of moving the dish 22 from its usage position towards its storage position through the first joint 30 when the lid 14 moves from its open configuration to its closed configuration.

In the first embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 4, the device 10 comprises a drawer

120 for reception of one or several cosmetic articles, and means for connecting this drawer 120 to the base 12. The drawer 120 comprises a bottom wall 122 and a peripheral wall 124 projecting upwards from the bottom wall 122. The peripheral wall 124 and the bottom wall 122 together delimit a storage space 126 for the first cosmetic article. A gripping zone 128 of the drawer 120 is formed in a front region of the drawer 120.

The storage space 126 contains a tool for application of the cosmetic product or a cosmetic treatment tool. As a variant, it contains a cosmetic product, for example in the form of a cake of a cosmetic product.

The drawer 120 is mounted movable relative to the base 12 between a retracted position in the base 12 and an extended position outside the base 12.

In the retracted position, the drawer 120 is entirely housed in the base 12. It is received in the storage compartment 20. It is inserted between the bottom wall 40 of the base 12 and the dish 22.

In the extended position outside the base 12, the drawer 20 projects at least partially outside the base 12. Access to the storage space 126 is then exposed at the top.

The drawer 120 may for example be slidably mounted on the base 12 along the A- A' axis through the connecting means. The connecting means comprise in particular a guide rail formed in the base 12 and a guide element formed on the drawer 120. The guide rail and the guide element cooperate to guide sliding of the drawer 120 relative to the base 12 between its retracted position and its extended position.

For example, an extension opening 130 for the drawer 120 is formed in a front region of the peripheral wall 44 of the base 12 so as to enable the drawer 120 to extend outside the base 12 through the extension opening 130.

In the extended position, the drawer 120 has been pulled forwards away from the base 12. The space above the storage space 126 is then exposed to enable access to the cosmetic article located in this space 126. In the closed storage configuration, the drawer 120 extends along a mean plane substantially parallel to the bottom wall 40 of the base 12. The dish 22 covers substantially all of the drawer 120 and closes off the top of the storage space 126.

In the open usage configuration, the drawer 120 extends along a mean plane approximately parallel to the bottom surface 40 of the base 12. The dish 22 is in its usage position, at the rear of its storage position. Therefore a front part of the storage compartment 20 is no longer covered by the dish 22. The space above this front part of the storage compartment 20 is exposed in the usage position and the storage compartment 20 is accessible from the outside.

Operation of the first device 10 will now be described with reference to Figures 1 to

4. The lid 14 is initially in its closed configuration during storage of the device 10.

In this configuration, the dish 22 is in its storage position. The housing compartment 98 of the dish 22 is closed off by the lid 14 and is inaccessible from outside the device 10.

The dish 22 closes the storage compartment 20 preventing access to the cosmetic article contained in the storage compartment 20.

The insert 26 extends substantially parallel to the bottom wall 40 of the base 12 and the dish 22. The active face 100 of the insert 26 is facing the dish 22, away from the lid 14.

When the user wants to access cosmetic articles contained in the device 10, he or she releases the lid 14 and moves it towards its open configuration.

The user does this by lifting the lid 14 and tilting it about the C-C rotation axis in a first backwards rotation direction. During this displacement and as shown in Figures 2 and 3, the insert 26 pivots forwards relative to the lid 14 about the E-E' axis to reach its final position that it occupies in the open configuration. The insert 26 causes displacement of the dish 22 from its storage position to its usage position, through the first joint 30.

During displacement of the lid 14 from the closed configuration to the open configuration, the insert 26 moves the dish 22 backwards along the A-A' direction.

The insert 26 also pivots the dish 22 about its front end 88. It thus lifts the back end 92 of the dish 22.

The dish 22 thus reaches its usage position.

When the lid 14 is moved from the closed configuration to the open configuration, it passes through an intermediate configuration shown in Figure 2. In this intermediate configuration, the insert 26 has lifted the back end 92 of the dish 22. It has not yet moved the dish 22 backwards. The dish 22 is then in an intermediate position. In the example shown, the displacement of the dish 22 from its storage position to its usage position includes sliding of the first guided elements backwards in the first guide rails along the A-A' direction, and pivoting of the dish 22 about these first guided elements until reaching the usage position. The pivoting of the dish 22 causes lifting of the back end 92 of the dish 22.

In the open configuration of the lid 14, the insert 26 in this example is at an obtuse angle γ with the dish 22. Access to the housing compartment 98 in the dish 22 is exposed at the top. The user can thus access the cosmetic article contained in the housing compartment 98 of the dish 22. The housing compartment 98 is tilted forwards in the usage position of the dish 22. This housing compartment 98 is thus facing the user. This facilitates access to the cosmetic article contained in the compartment.

Moreover, in its usage position, the dish 22 exposes a front part of the storage compartment 20 that it covers in its storage position. Thus, the dish 22 exposes the access passage 1 17 to the storage compartment 20. This access passage 1 17 forms an extraction passage for the drawer 120. The user can then move the drawer 120 into its extended position outside the base 12 through the extraction passage. Thus, the user easily extends the storage drawer 120 from its retracted position in the storage compartment 20 into its extended position by pulling on the drawer 120 in the gripping zone 128 and moving the drawer 120 through the extraction passage and the extension opening 130.

The packaging device according to the invention thus facilitates gripping and extraction of the storage drawer 120 due to the backward movement of the dish 22 during displacement of the lid 14 into its open configuration. This backward movement releases access to the gripping zone 128 and releases the extraction passage of the drawer 120, covered by the dish 22 in its storage position. The user thus easily accesses the cosmetic article contained in the storage drawer 120. Thus, the backward movement of the dish 22 during displacement of the lid 14 into its open configuration facilitates the grasping of the cosmetic article contained in the storage compartment 20 of the base 12.

With the packaging device 10, a user can thus access two cosmetic articles, the first contained in the storage drawer 120 and the second in the dish 22, simply by tilting the lid 14 into its open configuration and pulling on the drawer 120 that he can easily access once the lid 14 is in its open configuration.

For example, the dish 22 contains a cosmetic product, particularly of the eye shadow, or powder or lipstick type, while the storage drawer 120 contains a tool for application of this cosmetic product. This packaging device 10 is also compact. In its closed configuration, the drawer 120 is housed in the base 12 under the dish 22. Therefore the device 10 is compact in this configuration. The drawer 120 becomes easily accessible in the open usage configuration, but it is not displaced into its extended position automatically. Thus, the user can choose whether or not to extend it, and if so, over what distance.

The backward movement of the dish 22 during the displacement of the lid 14 into its open usage configuration limits the size of the device 10 in the usage configuration, contrary to prior art devices comprising dishes which extend outside of the base through an opening at a front end of the base in the usage configuration of the device.

Figure 5 shows a packaging device 10 according to a second embodiment. The packaging device 10 according to the second embodiment is different from the packaging device according to the first embodiment only in that it does not have a storage drawer free to move relative to the storage compartment 20.

The packaging device 10 according to the second embodiment comprises one or several cosmetic articles 140 contained directly in the storage compartment 20.

For example, the cosmetic article 140 is a tool for application of a cosmetic product, particularly a sponge, for example with a parallelepiped shape or a cosmetic treatment tool. As a variant, it may be a cosmetic product, for example in the form of a cake.

In the second embodiment, the storage compartment 20 delimits a receiving housing 142 for the cosmetic article 140 opening up facing the dish 22. The cosmetic article 140 is housed in this receiving housing 142.

In the closed storage configuration, the receiving housing 142 is delimited by the bottom wall 40 and the peripheral wall 44 of the base 12. It is delimited at the top by the dish 22. The receiving housing 142 is covered by the dish 22 and is therefore inaccessible from the outside.

The cosmetic article(s) 140 is (are) contained in the receiving housing 142. They are covered by the dish 22 in the closed storage configuration. They are placed on the bottom of the receiving housing 142.

In the open usage configuration, the dish 22 occupies its usage position. In this position, it leaves a front part of the receiving housing 142 exposed, that it covers in the storage position. It thus releases an access passage 1 17 to the receiving housing 142. In particular, this access passage 1 17 is formed facing the cosmetic article 140. It thus provides access to the cosmetic article 140 housed in the receiving housing 142.

Thus, the backward movement of the dish 22, by exposing the space above the front part of the receiving housing 142, particularly above the cosmetic article 140, makes it easy for the user to grip this cosmetic article, for example in order to extract it outside the receiving housing 142. Thus, the backward movement of the dish 22 during displacement of the lid 14 into its open configuration facilitates the grasping by a user of the cosmetic article 140 contained in the storage compartment 20, thus facilitating the extraction of this cosmetic article 140 from the base 12.

This device is particularly compact.

The backward movement of the dish 22 during the displacement of the lid 14 into its open usage configuration limits the size of the device 10 in the usage configuration, contrary to prior art devices comprising dishes which extend outside of the base through an opening at a front end of the base in the usage configuration of the device.

It is also inexpensive to manufacture.

It enables a user to easily and simultaneously access two cosmetic articles simply by tilting the lid into its open configuration.

For example, the dish 22 houses a cosmetic product, particularly such as eye shadow, powder or lipstick, while the receiving housing 142 contains a tool for application of this cosmetic product.
