Description:
Title:

PAINT BRUSH WITH A CASSETTE COLLAR WITH INWARD EXTENDING PARTS Technical field

The present disclosure relates to a paint brush. More specifically, the disclosure relates to a paint brush as defined in the introductory parts of and claim 1.

Background art

The conventional paint brush has a handle and a bristle head/bristle pack including a bundle of bristles, which is able to hold therein a paint by adhesion as well as capillary forces.

A parameter for a paint brush is the paint pick-up and the paint release, i.e. the amount of paint that the paint brush pick-ups when it is dipped in paint and the amount of paint that the paint brush is able to release to the surface to be painted. A large paint pick-up is often a prerequisite for a god paint release.

There is thus a need for a paint brush with improved paint pick-up.

Summary

It is an object of the present disclosure to mitigate, alleviate or eliminate one or more of the above-identified deficiencies and disadvantages in the prior art and solve at least the above-mentioned problem.

The inventors have realized that a paint brush picks up paint both by adhesion/wetting of the paint to the bristles and by capillary forces that is created between bristles and that sucks the paint into the bundle of bristles. There is a lot of focus on how to increase the paint pick-up of the tip of the paint brush by testing different types of blends of bristles, structures of the tips of the bristles and different inlays/inserts separating the bristles in a bundle of bristles. The amount of paint that could be picked up by the tip of the bundle of bristles is limited by the laws of physics, as an example the capillary forces in relation to the gravity forces. However, the inventors have realized that the paint brush not only picks up paint from the tip of the bundle of bristles, but also from the sides of the bundle of bristles, also above the distance from the tip at which the capillary forces could suck paint into the bundle of bristles. The sides of the bundle of bristles picks up paint by capillary forces and by wetting when paint makes contact with the bundle of bristles. According to a first aspect there is provided a paint brush, comprising a handle, a cassette collar and a bundle of bristles comprising a plurality of bristles, wherein the cassette collar is connected to the handle, the cassette collar comprises a wall defining a recess and one or more inward extending parts connected to the wall and positioned in the recess, the bundle of bristles comprises a top bundle part, a bottom bundle part and a middle bundle part positioned between the top and bottom bundle parts, the plurality of bristles being arranged such that they extend from the bottom bundle part to the top bundle part, the bundle of bristles is connected to the cassette collar, at least by that at least a portion of the bottom bundle part is arranged in the recess, and the inward extending parts extend from the wall and protrude into the bottom bundle part arranged in the recess such that a circumference of the middle bundle part, which is not in direct contact with the inward extending parts, is increased to be at least 10% larger than a circumference of the recess.

By increasing the circumference of the middle bundle part, the area that is exposed to paint when the paint brush is dipped in paint is increased. The area being the circumference times the length of the middle bundle part. The increased area increases the contact area that is exposed to paint when the paint brush is dipped in paint and thereby increases the possible paint pick up by the paint brush. The increased area increases the ability of the middle bundle part to pick up paint by capillary forces, wetting and direct contact with the paint. The paint is picked up from the sides of the bundle of bristles in addition to the paint that is picked up from the tip of the paint brush. The inward extending parts protrude into the bundle of bristles such that they effect the circumference of the bottom bundle part and the middle bundle part that is not in direct contact with the inward extending parts. The middle bundle part also picks up paint by paint entering into voids at the surface of the middle bundle part.

A 10% increase of circumference of the middle bundle part, which is a relatively large increase in circumference (due to the resulting undulating circumference of the middle bundle part), means that a larger pick-up area is created. Thus, the inventive paint brush achieves an improved paint pick-up capability due to this increase in circumference.

According to some embodiments, the inward extending parts and the wall are integral parts. By being integral parts, the wall and the inward extending parts could be made in a robust and efficient way.

According to some embodiments, the inward extending parts are fused or adhesively connected to the wall. According to some embodiments, the inward extending parts extends from a bottom edge to a top edge of the wall, wherein the top edge of the wall defines the opening of the recess. By the inward extending parts extending over the whole length/depth of the recess and by interacting with the bristles over as long distance as possible the inward extending parts could affect the circumference more and at a further distance from the cassette collar.

According to some embodiments, the recess is a through going hole.

According to some embodiments, the inward extending parts having a cross sectional shape with a base and a protruding surface, wherein a width of the base is smaller than a total length of the protruding surface. By having a protruding surface that is larger than the base, the circumference that is in contact with the bottom bundle part is increased as the base is connected to the wall of the cassette collar.

According to some embodiments, the inward extending parts has a height of at least 1,5 mm, preferably at least 2 mm, extending from the wall into the bottom bundle part.

According to some embodiments, the inward extending parts extend between 1,5 mm to 5 mm into the bottom bundle part in relation to the wall.

According to some embodiments, the inward extending parts has a triangular, square and/or wavy cross sectional shape.

According to some embodiments, the circumference of the middle bundle part is at least 20% larger than the circumference of the recess. This provides an even larger pick-up area.

According to some embodiments, the circumference of the middle bundle part is between 10-60% larger than the circumference of the recess, preferably between 20-60% larger than the circumference of the recess.

According to some embodiments, the inwards extending parts covers at least half the circumference of the wall.

According to some embodiments, the inwards extending parts covers at least 75% of the circumference of the wall.

According to some embodiments, the inwards extending parts covers the wall. According to some embodiments, the middle bundle part is located at a distance of at least 1 cm from the cassette collar.

According to some embodiments, the middle bundle part is located at a distance of at least 2 cm from a top end of the bundle of bristles.

According to some embodiments, the length of the middle bundle part is at least half the length of the bundle of bristles.

According to some embodiments, the length of the bottom bundle part corresponds to the depth of the recess and the length of the top bundle part corresponds to the length to which the bundle of bristles can pick up paint from the tip of the bundle of bristles.

According to some embodiments, a depth of the recess is at least 7mm.

According to some embodiments, the depth of the recess is between 7mm - 15mm.

According to some embodiments, a depth of the inward extending parts corresponds to the depth of the recess.

According to some embodiments, the wall of the recess is parallel with the plurality of bristles in the bundle of bristles.

According to some embodiments, the cassette collar is arranged to be mechanically connected to the brush handle.

According to some embodiments, the cassette collar and/or the plurality of bristles are made from a thermoplastic polymer.

According to some embodiments, the paint brush comprises an insert at least connected to the bundle of bristle.

According to some embodiments, the paint brush comprises a ferrule configured to connect the cassette collar to the handle.

According to some embodiments, the inward extending parts protrudes into the bundle of bristles in a direction that is perpendicular to the extension of the bristles in the bundle of bristles.

According to some embodiments, the wall and the inward extending parts defines a second recess that is a sub-part of the recess, wherein the circumference of the second recess is larger than the circumference of the recess. The second recess is the opening that the bottom bundle part is arranged in.

According to some embodiments, the cross sectional shape of the second recess substantially corresponds to the cross sectional shape of the middle bundle part.

According to some embodiments, the cross sectional shape of the second recess has a gear shape.

According to some embodiments, the cross sectional shape of the second recess has the shape of a circular or elliptical gear.

The bundle of bristles 4 is connected to the cassette collar 3. The bundle of bristles 4 is at least connected to the cassette collar 3 by that at least a portion of the bottom bundle part 43 is arranged in the recess 32, as is disclosed in figure 17 and 20.

The inward extending parts 33 are positioned in the recess 32. The inward extending parts 33 and reduces an opening 38 of the cassette collar 3. The inward extending parts 33 extends from the wall 31. The inward extending parts 33 extends from the wall 31 into the recess 32. The inward extending parts 33 protrudes into the bottom bundle part 43 arranged in the recess 32. The inward extending parts 33 protrudes into the bundle of bristles 4 and separate bristles 5 from other bristles 5 of the bundle of bristles 4, as is disclosed in figure 20.

The recess 32 has a circumference C2 as is disclosed in figure 7. The circumference C2 of the recess 32 corresponds to a length of the wall 31.

The bundle of bristles 4 has according to an aspect different circumferences from its top to its bottom. The bristles 5 in the bundle of bristles 4 are affected by the shape of the wall 31 and the shapes of the inward extending parts 33. The cross sectional shape of the bundle of bristles 4 are different along the length of the bundle of bristles 4. Put in another way, the cross sectional shape of the bottom of the bundle of bristles 4 is different from the cross sectional shape of the top of the bundle of bristles 4, as is schematically disclosed in figure 18 and 20. Figure 18 discloses a cross sectional view along the line C-C in figure 17 and the figure 20 discloses a cross sectional view along the line A-A in figure 17. The circumference of the bottom bundle part 43 of the bundle of bristles 3 substantially corresponds to a circumference C3 of the cassette collar 3 defined by the wall 31 and the protruding surfaces 332 of the inward extending parts 33, as is schematically disclosed in figure 8.

The cross sectional shape of the bottom bundle part 43 corresponds to the cross sectional shape of the middle bundle part 42 in the transition between the bottom and middle bundle part 43, 42. The cross sectional shape of the top bundle part 41 corresponds to the cross sectional shape of the middle bundle part 42 in the transition between the top and middle bundle part 43, 42. The cross sectional shape of the middle bundle part 42 is different at the transition from the bottom bundle part 43 from the cross sectional shape at the transition to the top bundle part 41. This is due to the fact that the bristles 5 extend from the top to the bottom of the bundle of bristles 4 and thus each bristle 5 has a part that is located in the bottom bundle part 43, a part that is located in the middle bundle part 42 and a part that is located in the top bundle part 41.

The cross sectional shape of the bottom bundle part 43 is different from the cross sectional shape of the top bundle part 41. This is due to that the cassette collar 3 affects the shape of the bundle of bristles 4 less at parts of the bristles 5 that are positioned further from the cassette collar 3.

The inward extending parts 33 are configured to increase a circumference Cl of the middle bundle part 42 to be larger than a circumference C2 of the recess 32. The inward extending parts 33 increases the circumference C3 of the cassette collar 3 that is in contact with the bottom bundle part 43 of the bundle of bristles 4. Put in another way, the circumference of the parts of the cassette collar that is in contact with the bundle of bristles 4 is larger than the circumference C2 of the recess 32 of the cassette collar 3. The circumference of the bottom bundle part 43 substantially corresponds to the circumference of the parts of the cassette collar 3 that is in contact with the bundle of bristles 4, i.e. parts of the wall 31 and the protruding surface 332 of the inward extending parts 33. The parts of the bundle of bristles 4 that is not in direct contact with the cassette collar 3 could be re-arranged in the bundle of bristles 4 and the cross sectional shape changes. The inward extending parts 33 increases the circumference C3 of the cassette collar 3 that is in contact with the bottom bundle part 43 so much in relation to the circumference C2 of the recess 32, such that also the circumference Cl of the middle bundle part 42 is larger than the circumference C2 of the recess 32. According to an aspect the circumference Cl of the middle bundle part 42 is reduced in relation to the distance from the cassette collar 3 and the circumference Cl of the middle bundle part 42 in the transition to the top bundle part 41 is larger than the circumference C2 of the recess 32. The larger the ratio of the length L of protruding surface 332 is in relation to the width W of the base 331, i.e. L/W, the larger the circumference Cl of the middle bundle part 43 will be in relation to the circumference of the recess 32.

According to an aspect the inward extending parts 33 increases the circumference Cl of the middle bundle part 42 by making the surface uneven in a radial direction, i.e. in a direction from the center of the bundle of bristles 4 and outwards. The length of the uneven surface is longer than if the surface would have been straight and smooth. The inward extending parts 33 separate the bristles 5 at the outer surface of the middle bundle part 42 from one another and creates voids 421 at the surface of the middle bundle part 42, as is disclosed in figure 19. The figure 19 discloses a cross sectional view along the line B-B in figure 17. When the paint brush 1 is dipped in paint, paint will enter into these voids 421 and be picked-up by the paint brush 1. The larger circumference Cl thus creates a larger surface on the middle bundle part 42, at which paint could be sucked into the bundle of bristles by capillary forces and wetting, and creates the voids 421, that could pick-up even further paint.

According to an aspect the inward extending parts 33 are configured to increase a circumference of the top bundle part 41 to be larger than the circumference C2 of the recess 32. The circumference to the top bundle part 41 is larger than the circumference C2 of the recess 32.

According to an aspect the inward extending parts 33 extends from a bottom edge to a top edge of the wall 31, wherein the top edge of the wall 31 defines the opening of the recess 32 as is disclosed in figure 12.

According to an aspect the inward extending parts 33 protrudes into the bundle of bristles 4 in a direction that is perpendicular to the extension of the bristles in the bundle of bristles 4. Put in another way, the inward extending parts 33 extends into the bundle of bristles 4 in a radial direction of the bristles 5. According to an aspect the wall 31 and the inward extending parts 33 defines a second recess 38 that is sub-part of the recess 32. According to an aspect the circumference of the middle bundle part 42 is between 10- 60% larger than the circumference of the recess 32. According to an aspect the circumference of the middle bundle part 42 is between 20-60% larger than the circumference of the recess 32.

According to an aspect the circumference of the bottom bundle part 43 is at least 10% larger than the circumference of the recess 32. According to an aspect the circumference of the bottom bundle part 43 is at least 20% larger than the circumference of the recess 32.

According to an aspect the circumference of the bottom bundle part 43 is between 10- 80% larger than the circumference of the recess 32. According to an aspect the circumference of the bottom bundle part 43 is between 20-80% larger than the circumference of the recess 32.

According to an aspect the circumference of the top bundle part 41 is at least 5% larger than the circumference of the recess 32. According to an aspect the circumference of the bottom bundle part 43 is at least 10% larger than the circumference of the recess 32.

According to an aspect the circumference of the bottom bundle part 43 is between 5- 40% larger than the circumference of the recess 32. According to an aspect the circumference of the top bundle part 41 is between 5-30% larger than the circumference of the recess 32.

According to an aspect the middle bundle part 42 is located at a distance of at least 1 cm from the cassette collar 3. Put in another way, the transition from the bottom bundle part 43 to the middle bundle part 42 is located at a distance of at least 1 cm from the cassette collar 3.

According to an aspect the middle bundle part 41 is located at a distance of at least 2 cm from a top end of the bundle of bristles 4. Put in another way, the transition from the top bundle part 41 to the middle bundle part 42 is located at a distance of at least 2 cm from the top of the bundle of bristles 4.

According to an aspect the length of the middle bundle part 42 is at least half the length of the bundle of bristles 4.

According to an aspect the top bundle part 41 is the part of the bundle of bristles 4 in which paint could be picked up by capillary forces from the tip of the bundle of bristles 4. According to an aspect the top bundle part 41 and the middle bundle part 42 are the parts of the paint brush 1 that is intended to be dipped in paint. According to an aspect the top bundle part 41 and the middle bundle part 42 are the parts of the paint brush 1 that is configured to be dipped in paint.

According to an aspect the wall 31 of the recess 32 is parallel with the plurality of bristles 5 in the bundle of bristles 3, as is disclosed in figure 2 and 3.

According to an aspect the handle 2 and/or the cassette collar 3 and/or the plurality of bristles 5 are made from a thermoplastic polymer.

According to an aspect the paint brush 1 comprises an insert at least connected to the bundle of bristles 4. When a painter paints a surface with a paint brush he/she starts by dipping the paint brush 1 in the paint. The paint interacts with the bundle of bristles 4 and the paint brush 1 pick-up paint and stores it in the bundle of bristles 4 of the paint brush 1. When the paint brush 1 is pressed towards a surface, the paint is released and the surface is painted. It will thus be possible to paint a larger surface with the paint brush 1 with an increased paint pick up in comparison to a similar paint brush without the increased circumference Cl. By similar is here meant a paint brush with the corresponding size and mix of bristles.

As the top bundle part 41 is dipped in paint, capillary forces and wetting will suck paint into the top bundle part 41 from the top of the bundle of bristles 4. In addition, paint will be picked up from the sides of the top bundle part 41. As the paint brush 1 is dipped further into the paint, also the middle bundle part 42 of the paint brush 1 will be immersed in the paint and start to interact with the paint. Capillary forces and wetting effects will suck paint into the middle bundle part 42 from the sides, i.e. from the outer surface of the middle bundle part 42, and further paint will be picked up by the paint brush 1. By being sucked in is meant that paint is sucked into the bundle of bristles 4 and positioned in voids between the bristles 5 in the middle bundle part 42. In addition to the paint that is sucked into the bundle of bristles 4, paint will also enter into the voids 421 at the surface of the middle bundle part 42. As the surface area of the middle bundle part 42 is increased by increasing the circumference Cl of the middle bundle part 42, in comparison to a similar paint brush without any inward extending parts, the paint pick-up by capillary forces and wetting will be increased. In addition to this, the inward extending parts 33 interacts with the bristles 5 of the bundle of bristles to create voids 421 at the surface of the middle bundle part 42. The voids 421 are configured to store paint and the possible paint pick-up by the paint brush 1 is thus even further increased by the inward extending parts 33. The inward extending parts 33 will thus increase the paint pick-up of a paint brush without increasing the size of the paint brush or the amount of bristles 5 in the bundle of bristles 5.

To manufacture a paint brush 1 according to the above, bristles 5 are aligned and mixed into a bundle. The bottom ends of the bristles 5 in bundle are thereafter pressed into the recess 32 with the inward extending parts 33 of the cassette collar 3. The amount of bristles 5 are adapted to the size of the recess 32 and the inward extending parts 33 such that it together with the inward extending parts 33 fills the recess 32. As the bristles 5 are arranged in the cassette collar 3 it creates a bundle of bristles 5 that has a corresponding shape as the cassette collar 3. The bristles 5 are positioned between the inward extending parts 33 and fills out gaps between the inward extending parts 33 and thereby the inward extending parts 33 extends into the bundle of bristles 4 and affects the circumference of the bundle of bristles 4 at least in the bottom bundle part 43 and the middle bundle part 41.
