A sales proceeds depositing machine (100) holds determination setting data (90c) in which the type of a merchandise coupon and the requirement for determining authenticity are associated. A type determination unit (91b) determines the type of an inserted merchandise coupon, and refers to the determination setting data. As a result, if the authentication determination requirement is set as "required" for the type of the merchandise coupon, an authenticity determination is performed by an authenticity determination unit (92a). As a result of the authenticity determination, if the merchandise coupon is determined to be a counterfeit coupon, the sales proceeds depositing machine ejects the merchandise coupon, and if the merchandise coupon is determined to be a genuine coupon, the sales proceeds depositing machine stores the merchandise coupon in a paper sheet cassette (53, 54). If the authentication determination requirement is set as "not required" for the type of the merchandise coupon, the sales proceeds depositing machine stores the merchandise coupon in the paper sheet cassette without the authenticity determination unit performing the authenticity determination.
