In order to accurately detect tape adhering to a paper sheet, this thickness determination method for determining the presence or absence of a tape body adhering to a paper sheet by means of a thickness determination device having a thickness detection sensor and an optical line sensor comprises: an optical image acquiring step for acquiring a paper sheet optical image by capturing, with the optical line sensor, an image of the paper sheet conveyed through a conveyance path; a thickness measurement step for measuring the thickness of the paper sheet with the thickness detection sensor; a tape body candidate detection step for detecting an optical edge on the paper sheet optical image and detecting the tape body adhering to the paper sheet on the basis of the optical edge; and a determination step for determining the presence or absence of the tape body adhering to the paper sheet by changing the criterion of determination depending on whether or not the tape body is detected in the tape body candidate detection step and assessing the measurement value measured in the thickness measurement step on the basis of the criterion of determination.
